Hi all,
Mittens was diagnosed with diabetes last week and as a result, put on a low carb canned food diet. Since I'm at work for most of the day, I need to find an option that would keep the wet food fresh for 6-8 hours until I get home. Do you all have any suggestions as to how to keep the food fresh while I'm away at work all day? What works for you?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions-I've been wracking my brain over this & I'm probbably making it harder than it is

there are timed feeders you can buy. lots of people do that. i think i've seen mention that some of them having a way to keep the food chilled too.

or you can freeze kitty food and as the day wears on it thaws and kitty eats it. hopefully. i've got a couple that go right for the frozen food cubes and lick them frozen. looney! :-) if you want to go this route you just put some wet food in a bowl, add some water to make it somewhat soupy then just put it into ice cube trays and freeze. i freeze up multiple trays on the weekends then store the cubes in large ziploc freezer bags and my stash is ready for the whole work week

Adding water to the food, a couple of tablespoons, think applesauce to soup consistency, helps to keep the food from drying out. Never have that problem here any more, since all my cats finish their food at one sitting. The food won't go bad in 6-8 hours. If it does dry out a little, some kitties actually like the dried crunchies.

You can either feed only what they eat in one sitting in the morning, and then feed them again when you get home, or leave the food out while you are gone. When you get home, add a few drops o water and stir. I don't recommend putting out frozen or chilled food. Cats usually won't eat anything they can't smell and freezing or chilling suppresses the smell of it.

I leave wet food out all day for my two.
When it's hot (we have no air con here in the UK), I use a 'cat mate' pet feeder without the lid or timer on. The 'cat mate' comes with cool packs that you freeze & they sit beneath the bowls keeping the food cool. It stays cool for ~ 12 hours or so.

I put food out in the morning and refresh it at night. Never had an issue. they graze on it all day. I have recently started mixing in a little water into Cookies food though to help her as she doesnt drink enough and that helps it stay moist longer.

fwiw, i actually got the suggestion from others here waaaaaaaaay back in 2006 when Mousie was first diagnosed and I learned about proper feline nutrition. been doing it ever since and so far no one has minded it in my house since then. of course they've all been rescues so they'll pretty much eat anything that even resembles food :-)

i can't do the just leaving the food out unfrozen cause i've got a few that will eat it all right away and not leave any for lunch or for the others. plus i'd have ants in my house real quick so i just stick to the frozen stuff for lunch thru the work week

Isn't that the whole point? It's frozen so there is no interest, then it defrosts and ooh wow the food has appeared! I have seen quite a few members here freeze food in ice cube trays and leave them out and it works well for them!
