New Member- question about glucose and ketone monitors

I am new here. My 8 1/2 year old female cat has recently been diagnosed with diabetes. We caught it early thankfully. I need to do a glucose/ketone curve and would really appreciate suggestions for monitors. Thank you!

Are you looking for a combo meter? Keto Mojo, Nova Max Plus, and Precision Xtra are some brands. Test strips are pricey.

Ketones can be monitored with inexpensive urine test strips and blood glucose levels can be monitored with any blood glucose meter. The Relion brand of meters sold at Walmart is affordable.

To clarify....

You do want to do a curve for blood glucose tests. A curve will give you information about when insulin onset occurs, where nadir falls (although the nadir can move around), and the amount of duration you're getting from insulin. Keep in mind, one curve won't reliably tell you all of what's going on. Getting curves weekly or every 2 weeks will begin to fill out the overall picture.

You don't curve ketone readings. Ketones readings can vary. Unless your cat was diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis, it's not important to test on a daily basis.

If you're planning on joining us, you may want to take a look at this post on helping us to help you. The post contains information on how to set up a spreadsheet and your signature. The spreadsheet will give you a place to collect your cat's blood glucose data. It will also allow us to see how your kitty is progressing so we can provide input. The signature gives us basic information about you and your cat. Without it, we keep pestering you by asking the same questions.
