Hi there we are new members, my sugar cat is named Cliff he is 8 1/2 years old and he started losing weight rapidly so I took him to the vet and we found out he has new diabetes. The vet suggested that we try a change in food first to see how much he brings his numbers down, his first number was 24. So for two weeks I changed his food and it only lowered it to about 18, then I just recently started him on Lantis of two units two times a day and only after three days I’ve got him down to about 12. The problem im having is, I bought a pet control HQ glucosemeter and it cost more for the actual strips themselves then the actual full kit. does anyone have any suggestions on a pet metre with reasonably priced strips?

Many members use human glucose meters. We have been using them long before someone came up with the idea of rebranding these meters and charging outrageous prices for the meters and strips. You can use any brand of human meter. If you are in the US, the Walmart Relion brand meters are good and inexpensive to use.

Welcome Sherry and Cliff
Lisa is right most of us use human meters that's what our numbers are based on, where do you live

If you would like any type of help you can fill this out
Here is a link helping us to help you link. If you noticed, our members have some basic information about their cat's in their signature. This helps us to not pester you by asking the same questions (your cat's name, insulin type, date of diagnosis, etc.) repeatedly. We also have a link to our spreadsheet in our signature. We are very numbers driven. The spreadsheet is a record of your cat's progress. By linking it in your signature, we can follow along and provide feedback should you need the help.

The signature is what you see in gray at the end of everyone's post
We also use a spreadsheet to track our cats BG, to see how the insulin is working and how low they are dropping. The link I gave you in blue will also tell you how to set up a spreadsheet and understanding it , if you have trouble setting it up just ask and we have a wonderful member who will help you with it

I assume Cliif is the black and white kitty he's adorable :cat:

Cliff! Excellent name! Welcome

We use a human meter, strips are $10 for 50 I think. Works great on a small droplet

Also have the Nova Max Plus which does both glucose and ketones, but haven't yet used it for glucose but we could. Ketone strips for that thing are really pricey ($20 for 10) but the glucose strips are affordable
