Good Evening,

Just want to start out by thanking you all. This is a tremendous resource and makes the minimal amount of information we got from the vet seem near worthless.

Jospeh has always been slightly big. We have tried to moderate his food intake to manage his weight with meh results. Being clueless and believing what the pet stores have said we have always believed that dry food was better for him and that it was best to minimize wet food.

When his weight again started to creep up, we locked out all the wet food which is right when his symptoms went through the roof. Took him in to the vet on Dec 24 and quickly got our diagnosis. This triggered the massive amount of learning we needed to do. We were lucky since Joseph loves the wet food. We have no problems keeping his intake down to slightly lower than maintenance levels and it's all low carb pages. At least we got a win there!

Started at 1unit of Lantus and after a low nadir we stopped shots while we figure out a plan to properly test and get into a tight regulation routine. We are 4 days into a tight regulation routine and it's going well. I'll work on getting our data plugged into the spreadsheet and hopefully we can achieve remission.

Numbers wise we have been keeping him under 200 easily and mostly under 150. We have our fingers crossed that we can eventually get him off the juice but regardless he will have his BG levels controlled
 
Hello and welcome! This place is a wonderful resource and the reason why my Billy has gone into remission. Vets can be notorious for not giving enough information on this disease. Like many human doctors, vets are rarely nutritionists. But you did exactly the right thing. You're in here learning and learning, which is going to help Joseph immensely.

Like you, I think a diet change to a dry food that was higher carb than I thought was a major factor in my Billy's getting diabetes. The change to low carb wet has been why he went into remission, and so quickly. You can click on Billy's Spreadsheet in my signature to see his progress. Now, every cat is different, but it sounds like Joseph has a good chance for remission as well, with how well he is doing. My Billy is a big boy, but he has lost some weight just from the food switch, and we aren't even limiting his food yet.

Your vet did a very good thing, he prescribed an insulin that works very well for cats. It is awesome that you are working on his spreadsheet. Also take a look at the information I have in my signature. There are some members here who are very experienced with Lantus. With the spreadsheet set up, and some info at a glance in your signature, they will be able to give you good advice for when to start reducing your Joseph's dose, and how to go about it.

You rock for taking such good care of your Joseph!

Can't open your SS link in your signature. I think you missed one of the steps in the setup process. Go back through the instructions and verify you did each of the steps correctly is your best bet.

We don't know, what you still don't know and need to learn. You're comment about how Jospeh and how he could hardly walk made me ask about the neuropathy.

What else don't you know, that we need you to know about? :):):)

Any other questions or comments about Jospeh are likely to kick the weirdest associations out of my brain. You never know.

If I may make a suggestion...

Please take a look at the information (sticky notes) that are at the top of the Lantus board. There's a huge amount of information in those posts and in the links in each of the notes. I'd also encourage you to post on the Lantus board. Each type of insulin has it's own board and especially in the Lantus forum, there's a great deal of expertise with that insulin.
