It was raw chicken and I was worried about bird flu, even after talking to someone from the company directly. They were great, I'm just very risk-averse. If I do switch him back, which I probably will once he's more regulated, I'll be doing either their fish or rabbit protein. The food is Instinct Raw. I miss it, lol. He never had a problem a day in his life before this.

NV Instinct has a rabbit variety. My civvie eats it and it's a back up food for Leroy.

I use the rice sock in the ear when I poke. It's small enough to hold in the ear. I have a tissue on hand to stop the bleeding while the meter does its thing.

Hi again and thank you all for all the help you’ve given me so far! I’m sorry to be such a pain, but I’m at a loss for what to do with Charlie’s dose again tonight (10pm) The meter got delayed as I thought it would and I have no way of getting one.

I’m so worried about him going into hypo with no way to test his numbers beforehand and no emergency vet nearby and wondering if I should skip his dose again tonight. I’m sorry to be a bother I’m just a mess and don’t know what to do. Any advice is appreciated

Lantus usually takes 5-7 days for the depot to build and to see what the dose can do. That said, it would be better if you are able to get the blood glucose tests. I would skip since you don’t have the BG monitor yet.

okay, thank you SO so much. And thank you for your quick response. I appreciate it greatly. That’s good to know about the buildup. :bighug:

That’s often the case when starting Lantus, most cats need the depot to build first, but I have seen cats have an immediate reaction so in the absence of some of the original labs about how Charlie was diagnosed and not being able to see BG I’d rather err on the side of caution, and since he didn’t have ketones, it’s ok to skip. Bummer about FedEx, let’s hope the supplies get to you soon.

That was exactly my thinking—if I had at least known what his levels were at diagnosis I would have *something* to work with, but I’m flying so blind here, haha. If FedEx fails me again tomorrow I’ll have more options since the vet opens back up. They might even have a pet monitor or can point me in the right direction. I’m going to call them first thing.

Charlie’s one fluffy fella, sending lots of belly rubs. We’ve thrown a lot of info at you the last couple of days, so once you absorb, feel feel to shout when you have questions ;).
He sure is! And I’ll give a couple of extra belly rubs for ya—It’s one of my favorite things to do! Thanks again. I’ve been reading up on everything and I appreciate all the resources.

You’re very welcome. And btw you are not a bother :bighug:. That’s what we’re here for. How about starting a new post tomorrow, since this one is getting a wee bit long? My scrolling finger is getting tired of going so far back :p

Actually any human meter is ok! you do not need a pet meter, it's expensive and so are the strips.:bighug::cat::cat:
