Hi there! My name is Missy and my sugar cat's name is Abigail. (I have 3 others too) I've had Abigail since she was 6 weeks old. I always wanted a black and white Maine Coon cat. My husband and I were looking at houses and this sweet black kitty walked into the house like she owned the place. She was a stray so my Realtor took her home to take care of her. She turned out to be pregnant and that is where Abigail came from!

Abigail is my very special princess cat. She has very long hair with tufts that she grooms constantly. Sometimes if the liter is not the correct level in the liter box and her hair on her butt touches the litter she will go poo right outside the box as to keep her little butt clean! She is also a terrible traveler so the constant trips to the vet at the onset of her diagnosis was horrible. Our vet is one of the top in our area and we are lucky she is only 15 minutes from the house. Abigail gets so upset that she pees, poos, and then starts panting in her carrier all in less than 15 minutes. The last time she went to the vet they had to give her a bath- which she was not happy about either. Anyhow she is just a very very special cat. If this happened to any other cat it would have been so much simpler.

I have not been home testing her. I purchased the machine and have tried but with no luck and without stressing her out too much. I am still trying in a very stress free way. I'll sit with her everyday and stroke her ears. It's hard to reward her because she does not like cat treats. She only likes as a "treat" tuna, lunchmeat turkey, or chicken. I usually have some turkey with me but she catches on. She has been taking her shots now with very little problems. My husband or I will hold her while the other administers the shot. Regardless we are still trying.

She is also a carb o holic. She will not eat canned food. I've been following the tips on this page to try and transition her.http://www.catinfo.org/docs/TipsForTran ... -14-11.pdf My other cats took to 100% wet food diet with no problem. For now I have to feed Abigail the diabetic dry food since she gets shots. My vet said there isn't any concern and that the dry diabetic food should be fine but I am not seeing an improvement in Abigail. Everywhere I am reading states that diabetic cats should be on wet food. She just will not budge. I am trying the tips and tricks but she will not go to the wet food. I bought the Fortiflora, I've used parmigiana cheese. For her it's her dry food only

I am starting to get some concerns. First she has lost some weight, Before diabetes she was 15 lbs. At the onset she was 12 lbs. Now she is 10 lbs. She is always hungry but she only nibbles at her food. Then when we are eating she begs for food like crazy. I am having such a hard time getting her to eat wet food. I have a hard time testing her and I really don't want to send her to the vet and stress her out more. The vet did a few glucose curves on her because her stress levels were so high the first time. The vet started her at 2 units twice a day on Lantus. After her 3rd curve they dropped her to 1 unit twice a day.

I really just want to get my baby healthy. Her coat is lack luster and she has dandruff now. And she is so skinny. She is otherwise healthy besides the diabetes. She is just very difficult to regulate and I need as much help as possible. I've done everything the vet said and it's still not working. She is a happy cat. She plays, cuddles, and interacts with us. But she is always hungry and thirsty at times. We have a fountain which she always liked to play in. She still plays in it but is drinking more too. I can't seem to get control of the diabetes and she is such a difficult cat that all of the things required to help her (wet food, home testing) she is super resistant to. SO much that she could hurt herself. Any advice would be great. I've been doing lots of research. Thank you!

Hello there and welcome to the board!

Abigail sounds like a really sweet cat - I dont blame her for being stressed at the vet though.. many cats are.

Can I first ask how she was diagnosed? Did the vet mention "fructosamine level" after sending the blood to a lab? Or how did he diagnose?

I am glad you have been trying to home test. But dont worry, many new people have issues so here are some tips that may help you - these were collected from our members many of whom had issues at first with testing too : https://docs.google.com/document/d/13c_CPZVKz27fD_6aVbsguadJKvjSrSAkD7flgPPhEag/pub

If she wont eat dry - have you tried fancy feast classic pates or flaked varieties? My cats LOVE those and will eat them happily. If not, then you could try a low carb dry - that would make it easier to regulate her - heres some suggestions http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=86715

Thank you! I took her to the vet because she lost some weight. They did a full blood panel which showed her blood sugar level at 416. Then in subsequent weeks she had 3 glucose curves. She will not eat anything but dry. I've tried everything. When I told the vet that she will not eat the wet food the vet said as long as she eats the diabetic dry she should be fine. But she's not getting better.

My biggest concern with the food was because I just took one of my other cats and they did a full blood panel at the check up just for a health scan and said his level was around 316. They said changing his diet may do enough without any insulin. Right now I just switched him and my other cats to 100% wet food. They eat Authority food from Petsmart. They only like the flaked though not the pate. I looked up the food information on Dr Lisa's chart and it seemed like a good food.

So I have a diabetic cat and a boarderline cat.

If you're feeding the prescription diabetic dry food, it may have too many carbs, too.

Wellness Core, Innova Cat and Kitten, and Young Again 0 Carb are a few dry cat foods which are low enough in the calories from carbohydrates that they may be used. Still not enough water, but the cat has to eat!

Is she walking away from the food, licking her lips? Crouching in a hunched position at all? If you massage her tummy (assuming she likes it), does she want to get away?

Until her diabetes is regulated, she will be hungry, and may continue to lose weight. You may feed her 50% more than a non-diabetic would require and she might still be hungry.

Testing will tell you if you have the optimal insulin dose. Urine ketone testing will tell you if she's getting into trouble. Ketones form when fat is broken down for calories. Too many ketones may signal diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a potentially fatal medical emergency requiring expensive hospitalization. Tips in my signature link Secondary Monitoring Tools explain ways to use these.

Abigail will let you pick her up and touch her belly. I think she walks away sometimes because the other cats annoy her while she is trying to eat. I sit and pet her for a few minutes so she is calm and eats.

I saw this food on one of the other forums here and am going to order it. http://www.youngagainpetfood.com/10brow ... egory=cats

Right now she is eating Purina DM http://www.petfooddirect.com/product/58 ... 4Aod2UUApw

Do you think that the Young Again food is better than the diabetic food?

Think this is the % basis, not the % dry matter basis, and it isn't the "as fed" percent calories from, which is what you need to determine if you want to use it.
Protein,%53.30%
Fat,%16.50%
Calcium,%1.46%
Sodium,%0.64%
Chloride,%0.53%
Taurine,%0.19%
Total Omega 3,%0.36%
Carbohydrate,%13.79%
Fiber,%1.17%
Phosphorus,%1.40%
Potassium,%0.60%
Magnesium,%0.12%
Total Omega 6,%2.02%

It is Purina DM but it's probably the same thing. I really need to get her to eat wet food. Tonight my husband and I are going to try a few different things to test her. I read on here a little bit ago to wrap the kitty up in a burrito . So I think I may try that.

Smelll her breath - does it smell fruity or like nail polish remover? If no, good.

Please pick up some urine ketone test strips from the pharmacy. Ketones develop when fat is broken down for calories. Too many may signal diabetic ketoacidoses (DKA), a potentially fatal, expensive to treat complication of diabetes which requires hospitalization in most cases. Tips on using them are described in my signature link Secondary Monitoring Tools. A cat that is not eating or not eating much is at an increased risk of DKA.

I just got home a little bit ago. Her breath smells like normal kitty breath! As soon as I got home I was determined to test her and the little brat just made a liar out of me. She sat still and was just as sweet. Her sugar was 316 and she ate all of her food which she hasn't done in a while. I am trying to keep a very tight schedule. I have 4 cats so it can be tough. I think they all know that there is a feeding time now. No more grazing. I am going to test her sugar again in a few hours to see how she is doing. She did just fine today. I told my husband when he got home and he couldn't believe it. Now I just need to get her under control. She is still so hungry

Yes, the Young Again food is better than the diabetic dry which is much higher in carbs.
The Young again has Zero Carb and their regular formula 50/22 has 5% or less and their Mature Formula has 4% or less carbs.

I just ordered some for my hard food junkie.

If she will eat tuna for a treat, there are some low carb tuna flavors you might try. Also if you are near a Trader Joe's, they have "Tuna for Cats" nothing but cooked flaked tuna with the necessary vitamins, amino acids and minerals a cat needs (human tuna will not provide these so can't be used as a complete diet)

Since she will eat lunch meat, have you considered feeding her a raw diet or letting her eat a tablespoon or two of plain cooked chicken breast or thigh or turkey with her dry food? This will at least get her some added protein to go with the higher carb dry food and cut her carb intake overall.

My fatty boy will only take one or two bites of pate wet food, he's the hard food junkie, but surprisingly he will eat the raw food rather readily especially if I don't chop it too fine or add much water -- just leave it a little chunky and dry.(I use a food processor). Right now I am giving him some of that with his dry.

There are many sites that have recipes for making raw food and there are premix vitamins and minerals in a convenient powder you add to the meat.

1 of my cats is a fish-only cat so I mix in a really smelly fish-flavoured food (I use fussie cat anchovy & tuna) with regular friskies or fancy feast non-fish varieties.
I only have to add a little to the top and the smell drives him wild.
Of course, the other 2 have now figured out that he gets the special stuff and they try to hold out for it too - but they give up too easily :-D

You said your kitty doesn't like cat treats? Mine didn't either until we tried freeze dried chicken (I use Purebites) - now I have 3 hooked kitties.
They didn't like any of the other treats - tuna flakes, catnip flavour etc.. - but this stuff is like magic. I just shake the bag and the 3 come running - I'm now using it as a treat when I brush them.
I'm going to start brushing their teeth and using the treat to, hopefully, make it go smoothly!

Good info to know. There is a Trader Joes not directly in my area but again not completely far away. I can head out there and try the cat tuna. She goes crazy for it. Thanks for the suggestion. I also read the other post about making your own food. Has anyone done that. I read on Dr Lisa's site about making food, but again it's like cooking any recipe (for people or cats) it may not turn out the way hers did.

Anyone ever made their own food and have some good tips. She does like lunch meat and chicken- like if I am grilling chicken for myself she will go crazy for it. And tuna of course. She has even stolen bites of my sushi! She is such a little brat. I love her!

I haven't tried freeze dried treats but I will check into that as well. I am going to order the Young Again today. I keep hearing such good things about it.

She was so good last night with testing but this morning I didn't get enough blood the first time and she was not happy so she bit me and ran away. I can understand. She gets poked everyday for her shot and now I am adding a new element to it. I coax her into her tests with the container of turkey lunch meat.

Thank you everyone for the tips. She is a very loved kitty cat. She has been diabetic since June of 2012. Since then I've been doing everything the vet has suggested with only mediocre results. She is happy- not lethargic but I can tell she needs more and this site is giving me more information. She is a little skinny and her coat is very dandruffy. I read that if her sugar is out of whack that her coat can be a little gross.

I will keep everyone posted on her results. Thanks again!

Quite a few people here do make their own food.. Here is the recipe dr Pierson recommends for a balanced diet http://www.catinfo.org/?link=makingcatfood

Remember to always give a treat after testing whether successful or not. And the three strike rule is good too, try three times and if you don't get blood give her a break for a few hours.

I forgot to post but she was very good this afternoon. And her blood sugar was better. It was 250. I use a Relion Prime. Didn't have luck in the morning but after work went smoothly. I really think the cats would take to home made food. I will have to try it and give my results.

I wanted to let you guys know I DID make it to Trader Joes last night. It is maybe 20 mins from my house. I got the Tuna for Cats and Abigail was not impressed lol!!! I did find some great treats for me though. I am lactose intolerant and they have some good non-ice cream choices plus soy slices (immitation cheese) I've also been on a seaweed kick and I got some seaweed snacks.

I only got 6 cans of the Tuna for Cats. Luckily two of my cats thought it was tasty. So I have that in the rotation. Abigail continues to amaze me! I just checked my tracking on the Young Again food and it is due here on Monday. I heard some suggestions with giving a few pieces of raw turkey or chicken and believe me that is eaten!
