Hello to everyone. I was happy to find this community and look forward to getting help for my Opie. We have been trying for a year and a half to regulate him without success. My guess is that he is insulin resistant. We find that when we raise the insulin amount his numbers go up, not down which is strange. Currently, he stays in the 300's and even after insulin when he is at his low point in four hours {sometimes this changes and his low point is at the 12 hour point when insulin is due again} he hasn't been changing much if at all. There are days when he drops out but this is seldom and happens regardless of high or low levels of insulin given. Sometimes his numbers get up in the 400's and we get desperate and raise the insulin amount. He gets warm, his ears and body and the numbers raise instead of go down. He is clinically ok because he doesn't drink much and usually eats well although this has been an issue as of late. Nothing we do seems to work for him and he has been in the 300's for quite some time now. Does anyone have an idea what to do for him?

we really need to see his numbers to be able to give you accurate advice. Sometimes cats will go higher when you raise the dose because they hit a low and their body is overcompensating. That’s called bouncing. Would you be able to put his bg numbers into the spreadsheet format we all use here?

what insulin is he on and what’s the current dose? Also, what are you feeding him? It sounds like you’re already home testing. Do you test before each shot every day? If you noticed, our members have some basic information about their cat's in their signature. This helps us to not pester you by asking the same questions (your cat's name, insulin type, date of diagnosis, etc.) repeatedly. We also have a link to our spreadsheet in our signature. We are very numbers driven. The spreadsheet is a record of your cat's progress. By linking it in your signature, we can follow along and provide feedback should you need the help.

With a diabetic cat you need
  • A low carb wet diet that is 10% carbs or under. Most of us use around 4-7% carbs
  • A suitable insulin such as Lantus or Prozinc which are long acting, more gentle insulins than the old insulins.
  • We recommend hometesting the blood glucose with a human meter…it is not necessary to use a pet meter which is expensive to run and is no better. It will keep your kitty safe and you will know how the dose is working for your kitty. Only testing every so often will not tell you what is happening in between those times and an awful lot can happen in even a day.

This is an excellent site for diabetic cats…it has been around for more than 25 years and has very experienced people to help you.

Thank you so much for your response. He is on ProZinc, we use a human meter and test before each injection and at the expected low point or so, that is usually around the 4 hrs but today it was at the 12. We feed him Fancy Feast classic pate. Every time we try the prescription diet he goes way up in numbers. I will try to do as you ask and work on a spreadsheet but this will most likely take a bit of time since I assume you want everything from the beginning? I am not very familiar with commenting on forums so I am bound to make mistakes but will do my best. Again, thanks.
 
Don’t feed him the prescription diet. It’s too high in carbs. Stick with FF pate, that's what most of us feed. Prozinc is a great insulin. We should be able to give you dose advice once we see the spreadsheet.

one more question about feeding. Are you feeding 2 big meals at shot times and smaller meals or snacks throughout the day?

FOOD CHART have a look on this chart and choose foods that are under 10%.
 
He eats FF all day long but he is getting finicky and we are having trouble getting him to eat although he is hungry. Sticking to only foods that are under 10% carbs.

Hi and welcome, I am going to tag a prozinc user for you and see how many weeks she would want to see , I don't think you would need the whole year and a half. Like Ale said if you need help setting up the spreadsheet and signature @bandits will help you just ask if you need help

Just call ADW and they will contact your vet and ask your vet for refills so you can then you can order them yourself

Hello again, I finally finished the spreadsheet for Opie and have put it on my signature for you to read. Am I supposed to start a new thread to continue now that I have this posted?
 
Not yet. Let’s wait for @Suzanne & Darcy to respond. I see you’re doing well testing during the day, but you have no data after the pmps. Do you think you can try to get some +2 or +3 in the night time? It helps a lot because it lets you know where your cat is headed overnight.
 
My vet made me feel that I was a terrible person for testing as often as I am already. I assume he is reacting in the pm pretty much the same as he does during the day. I will see what I can do.
 
I hate when vets do that. Mine did too. She had the audacity to say when I brought Minnie in because she wasn’t eating that maybe she wasn’t eating because she didn’t want to be pricked and tested all the time. Weeks later Minnie was diagnosed by her IM with intestinal cancer. Needless to say I no longer go to that moron of a vet :mad:
