Thank you for the opportunity to join this group. My Siamese Oliver is almost 15, and has been diabetic for about 9 months. This is my second go-round with feline diabetes. I adopted Oliver snd his sister after losing my sweet Grizelda to a combo of diabetes and kidney failure at age 16. Grizelda did really well with her diabetes for about 3 years but the added kidney disease made her much sicker. Oliver was hard to stabilize but once we got the right dosage of insulin (we are using Lantus) and found higher protein food that he would eat, he had been doing mostly well. He is also arthritic, so goes to vet monthly for Solensia (which is helping him), and also a shot of Vit B12 (which could do at home but since he goes in anyway every 4 weeks. it's easier to have vet do it). We are fortunate to have an amazing feline-only vet who is very experienced with diabetes. I'm here to learn more, to better support Ollie.

Welcome Mary and Oliver

If you would like to give us some info on Oliver

Here is a link helping us to help you link. If you noticed, our members have some basic information about their cat's in their signature. This helps us to not pester you by asking the same questions (your cat's name, insulin type, date of diagnosis, etc.) repeatedly. We also have a link to our spreadsheet in our signature. We are very numbers driven. The spreadsheet is a record of your cat's progress. By linking it in your signature, we can follow along and provide feedback should you need the help.
If you need help setting up the spreadsheet just ask we have a member who will do it for you

Welcome to FDMB.

Please let us know if you have questions. You may want to take a look at the Health Links page. There's lots of general information there. Likewise if you're using Lantus, the sticky notes at the top of the board may be helpful.

Welcome! We have a lot in common. :) My Snickers also uses Lantus and is also on Solensia for her back arthritis. We've been using it about three months. I'm lucky in that my vet allows me to give the Solensia at home, but I had to sign a waiver saying I understood about the possible consequences if I injected myself with it. I used to give my old cat, Duchess, vitamin B-12 shots at home, as well.

Actually, that's part of the reason my vet lets me give the Solensia at home. She knows I used to give the B-12 shots, and I give the insulin, and now I've done subq fluids. I also used to give my little leopard gecko antibiotic shots when they were sick. Now that was a real challenge. The needle was bigger than my gecko, lol. Anyway. There's lots to learn here, so please ask questions if you have them :)
