Hi everyone,

I hope I have my signature and everything in order for my first question! :)

How much urine do you need for a urinary ketone test? I have True Plus test strips (they were the generic supermarket brand) I waited for Malchior to use the litterbox and swiped a strip along the wall where he had sprayed, but I'm not sure if it was enough to get an accurate reading. Mal is ok, I'm just trying to get ahead of the curve on testing and watching for DKA/hypoglycemia, etc. Thank you in advance!

You don't need a large amount but the idea is to dip the strip in the urine. Most of us will either pass the strip through the cat's urine stream while the kitty is peeing or use a spoon, ladle, or something similar to catch some urine and dip the strip in what you collect.

A comment on your spreadsheet... The cells that aren't colored in, you can color manually. Anything other than a number blocks the automatic color coding. You may also want to retitle the spreadsheet something other than what appears on the Google docs tab. It reads, "Human Meter FDMB US 12/12 Insulin Spreadsheet Template."

Thank you! Colors adjusted and sheets renamed. I'll have to work on my catching technique!

Hey Elizabeth! Welcome :bighug:

If the urine strips aren't working out for you... you can go the blood meter route for ketones.

$70 will get you going with the meter and 30 strips. The strips aren't cheap and you need twice the amount of a blood sample than your Relion glucose meter samples.

I swear by the Abbot Precision Xtra to test Ketones from the blood, it's more instant to detect than the urine and you get instant piece of mind without waiting for him to pee. https://www.amazon.com/DSS-Precision-Glucose-Results-Included/dp/B00JIK6CIW/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3QF0O42D8DS1X&keywords=abbott precision&qid=1704168830&sprefix=abbot precisio,aps,163&sr=8-1

The strips have come down quite I bit from when they first hit the market, I buy from this link and it's been great > https://www.amazon.com/Precision-Xtra-Ketone-Test-Strips/dp/B07CKX3XBW/ref=sr_1_2_pp?crid=1SHXWFTYCJUZN&keywords=precision xtra&qid=1704168572&sprefix=precision xtra,aps,184&sr=8-2
