Nym is our 8 year-old male neutered brown tabby and white.
He is technically my Mom’s cat but I’m in charge of our pet medical care (I’m an animal sciences major).

I have a LOT of research to do on diabetes in cats but I wanted a quick answer on when a cat should eat when on Novolin N 100 and how often they should eat.

Nym was just diagnosed three days ago and is on 2 IU of insulin twice a day.

I’m working on a diet change (my parents feed Purina Cat Chow Naturals dry food). It will likely be a low carb and high protein wet food but it depends on what he is willing to eat.

Nym is a healthy weight at 15lb but hasn’t been getting a lot of exercise the last couple years after a neighbor called the police on him and he went under “house arrest”. He does have a catio though.

We had him since he was just a couple weeks old and bottle raised him (he was an orphan).

Edit: waiting on our glucometer and urine test strips to arrive (ordered online)

Vet said blood glucose was 450 mg/dL with no ketones and urine glucose was 1000 mg/dL

Hi and welcome to the forum.
First of all, Novolin N is one of the worst insulins for cats. It is a fast acting, harsh insulin.
If you can I would change the insulin to either Lantus or prozinc. Both of these are recommended by the American Animal Association. Novolin N and vetsulin are not recommended.
Also the starting dose is either 1 unit if you are feeding a dry high carb diet, or 1/2 unit if you are feeding a low carb canned/wet diet.

We recommend you feed a hour before giving the dose because cats need food in their system before the insulin hits.
so the outline is test, feed, wait one hour, then give the shot.
I would also give several snacks of food during the cycle…mostly first half of this cycle when the insulin is strongest.
A snack is a teaspoon or 2 of low carb food.

Do you have a hypo kit set up in case you need it.
