Hi, I am a new member. My cat Nibbler is 13 years old - diagnosed about two months ago. I tried diet changes, but he kept getting worse, so he's been on insulin for almost a month. He's doing well. His vet has done one curve and increased his dosage from 2 units to 4. I'm still not sure we're at the right dosage. I need to get a glucometer so I can do some home testing and curves.

I was in denial for the first month and I'm still overwhelmed. I'm really glad that this message board exists to provide support and information.

If your vet increased the dose from 2-4 units at one time, that is very alarming. We have very few cats here on that much insulin, unless they have underlying conditions.

It is great that you want to test at home. You can get a testing kit from us but it will take a few days. If you can afford it, you can go to Walmart and get their ReliOn meter and strips for under $40. If her were my kitty, I would get a meter tonight and find out what his numbers are at home to be sure he is not getting too much insulin.

Whoa! Your vet may have set your cat up for hypoglycemia by incorrectly adjusting the insulin dose. Please go back to the 2 units as hypoglycemia kills quickly, with seizures, coma, and death.

If your vet prescribed Humulin N or Novolin N, these last only 6-8 hours in a cat, with the lowest glucose (nadir) about 3 to 4 hours after the shot. When you wait until 12 hours is up before giving insulin again, the glucose often skyrockets during the time the insulin is gone.

Effective, long-acting insulins for cats include Lantus, Levemir, ProZinc, and BCCP PZI.

While you are learning how to test blood glucose, please take a look at my signature link for Secondary Monitoring Tools, in particular, urine ketone testing. Ketones develop as a by-product when fat is broken down for energy.

Can you just clarify something? Did your vet increase the insulin dose from 2 units to 4 units in one go....?

What insulin is your cat on?
