Michele Peyton's Mom

Member Since 2021
Hello,
I'm Michele and my 5 year old cat, Peyton was diagnosed with diabetes in Dec. 2020. We've been using Lantus since the beginning. He gets 1 unit twice a day. I also started to test his levels 3 times a day about a month ago. I'm very new to diabetes and am trying my best to learn and figure this all out.

Welcome Michele and Peyton
To better help you we need some info about Peyton

to set up your signature
Go all the way up top to you name tap on it and a drop box will appear , you will see the word signature, tap that and just add all your information about Peyton and hit save.

Take a look at my signature all about Tyler all signatures are at the end of everyone's posts in gray

Add info we need to help you:
  • Caregiver & kitty's name
  • DX: Date
  • Name of Insulin (do not include dose or frequency)
  • Name of your meter
  • Diet: "LC wet" or "dry food" or "combo"
  • Dosing: TR or SLGS or Custom (if applicable)
  • DKA or other recent health issue (if applicable)
  • Acro, IAA, or Cushings (if applicable)
  • Spreadsheet link. Please put the signature link on the bottom line of your signature information, on its own, so it is easy to find.

We also use a spreadsheet to track our cats BG to see how it's workibg and how low it's dropping them
Members can then see his BG and give you advice
You said you have been testing him for about a month already so you can enter them in your spreadsheet.
If you have trouble setting it up just ask, we have a member here who will do it for you
The link below will also explain how the spreadsheet works
You need to be testing more than 3 times a day
You couldn't have found a better group to join we have many experienced members here
If it wasn't for their advice Tyler wouldn't be in remission today

You may find this post a bit more helpful. It has all of the links consolidated for the spreadsheet and signature along with some additional information that is helpful for new members.

I think you're dose is a bit too high. You're seeing some intermittently low numbers -- especially for an AlphaTrack meter. I'd suggest two things:
  • Start posting on the Lantus forum. You will get a great deal of experienced guidance from those who are posting regularly on that board.
  • Drop Peyton's dose to 0.75u. You've missed a couple of dose reductions already and it's important to keep your cat in safe numbers.
There are 2 dosing methods that you can choose from. One way in which they differ is with respect to when you take a reduction. The other important factor is when your cat is in low numbers and when you need to intervene with high carb food. On an AT meter, 68 is a low number. Please look over this post on handling low numbers so you know what to do should Peyton drop low again.
