Hi,

My cat was diagnosed a week and a half ago. Vet started him on 2u lantus BID. However, that resulted in a scary hypo episode on day 2 or 3 - we gave karo syrup and he recovered well. He also started low carb food around the same time as starting insulin.

We have gone down and down on the insulin - now to 0.25u BID but he is still dipping into the 50s at times (wearing a freestyle libre - we have double checked lows with accucheck a few times and it seems to correspond well). I am not sure what to do because his BG does rise to 200+ as the insulin wears off. I tried to give 0.1u once but he stayed in the 200s all day...

I am going to work on getting a spreadsheet. For now we are just monitoring closely for symptoms.

Sorry to hear about Sony's diagnosis and the hypo episode. Some vets do start off with 2 units if the BG numbers warrant it. Did they?

I was advised not to start low carb food at the same time I was starting Lantus. It is a double whammy. Since I wanted to start insulin immediately, I eased into low carb.
Some will start low carb feeding and put off insulin for a bit to prevent hypo.

For spreadsheet help, Bandit's Mom and Marje are great and have offered assistance in the past.
It is important to get those BG numbers on the spreadsheet for the very best dosing advice.

Thank you! I got a spreadsheet set up for my little buddy (very good instructions!). His glucose at diagnosis was 415 or 450 (at the vet) but I was not advised to test initially (vet said to do a curve 7-10 days after starting). I got a freestyle libre after his hypo episode. During the hypo episode I did test him with my accucheck meter (it just ready Lo).

Hi, Ashley :) You will have to do these steps again for us to be able to view your spreadsheet.

5. Click on "File" again, scroll down the list and click on "Publish to the web":

6. In the box that opens, be sure that "link" is underscored. If not, click on "link" to underscore it. Next, be sure the box below states "Entire Document". Then click "publish".

7. Google will ask if you are sure you want to "Publish this selection". Click "ok". A link will be provided; before you copy this link, scroll down and click on "published content and settings". Be sure the box next to "Automatically republish when changes are made" is checked.

Right now we cannot see it.

Great - thank you!

50s are still healthy numbers, but it seems like the simultaneous diet change is working wonders for Sony.

Do you leave food out during the day or feed multiple times? I've noticed my girl go back to her food dish between +5 and +7 for a snack to sort of self-regulate when she's around her nadir and bring her BG up.

We feed him twice a day but he does not eat all at once. It seems like he is doing OK with this dose so I suppose we will keep at it for now!
