Hello everyone :D
My name is Ella and my baby girl is Masha :cat: She's tiny and my other two are 17lbs. She had anesthesia in March where her glucose was high and I brought her for a full blood panel test last week where her glucose was 322. She was urinating on my new couch, which is now explained. We have started Glipizide yesterday and going for a check up in 2 weeks.

I'm very new to this but wanted to share some info of what I've done/learned so far.
- Bought KetoStix from Target.
- Did some scientific research for Glipizide. Found 28 out of 50 cats diabetes worsened via gov site research article, but it's a good medicine to start with short term.
- Switched to Royal Canin GlycoBalance as well as planning to try these if no results are seen: Tiki Cat, Fancy Feast NATURALS (economic choice) , Against The Grain (no pumpkin), Fussie Cat.
- Bought a pH stick to monitor any urine abnormalities. (more for UTI/infection tracking)
- Bought litter that also tracks urine abnormalities.
- Bought Dr.Elseys to try to stop the new couch urination.
- Found home made cat food and learned just meat is not enough. Cats need supplements such as calcium which comes from the bones of the meat, etc. Also found out if choosing to make at home food or switching to low carb food its essential to monitor glucose levels as the kitty may go into hypoglycemia.

I'm overall worried for her, hopeful and grateful to this site and public research. I have a fear that I could wake up and she may be gone but I'm here fighting strong.
All together I have 3 kitties, Fendi, Masha and Barsik. Fendi is the mom of the 2 children. One has diabetes.
Good luck to everyone and the other new members, we're in this together :bighug:

If someone can recommend which testing device they're using that'd be greatly appreciated. I'm seeing mixed reviews with AlphaTrak and don't mind to invest in a higher quality one as long as its accurate

forget the Glipizide and start on insulin. The longest acting insulin s are prozinc, Lantus, and Levemir.

good idea getting keto sticks. Did cat have any ketones? Do you have a copy of the bloodwork?

glycobalance is 14% carb. You want to keep the carbs under 10%. This is a food chart. Choose foods less than 10.

I use the Alpha track and love it. I’ve used it for 4 years. It’s probably the same your vet uses. Most here use human meters because the strips are a lot cheaper.

Hi Ella and welcome to you and Masha!

black kitties have a special place in my heart :cat:

I agree start with insulin. I waited a month and tried to manage the diabetes with diet only per vet advice and really regret it. The ones Janet mentioned are truly the best options.

And the human meter options most folks use here are Relion from Walmart, which is the one with the most economical test strips, and freestyle lite which is still cheaper than alphatrack so it’s up to you and what you’re comfortable spending. Just keep in mind once you start testing you’ll be going through those strips pretty fast 4-5 a day at least so 100 gets used up in less than a month. I started with freestyle and recently switched to ReliOn and I like both. ReliOn requires a bit more blood .5 as opposed to .3 but I honestly have not had any issues getting that amount.

lastly, FF wet can is what most of us feed our sugar babies so that’s an option for you but again if you’d rather get a higher end brand just follow the less than 10% rule Janet mentioned.

one more thing, Masha will be fine. Diabetes is not a death sentence at all and you’re already off to a great start. My Minnie just got back from the hospital yesterday and she’s got IBD, diabetes and now a heart murmur and she’s still alive and kicking and being a diva. They’re fighters and they just need us to give them the tools to do that :)

so glad you found us and you got this! :bighug:
