Hello everyone! My cat, Jojo, was recently diagnosed with type II diabetes. He got this diagnosis on 8/25/2026, so very recently! I had a feeling he was going to get diagnosed with diabetes, about a week before his formal diagnosis, so I have been silently stalking the forums on this website.

Jojo is currently having some dental problems, that are being pushed back due to the vet wanting him to get stable with his diabetes before he goes under for dental work. Because of this, he's unhappily eating Friskies wet food, shreds or pate. He's the first cat I've ever met who strongly dislikes wet food. I have only recently learned I should have some medium and high carb food for emergencies, but I have some of his old kibble food, Nutrisource, and it says it's about 27 g of carbs per cup. I'm unsure if this is good for an emergency, but I believe I saw someone recommend honey if needed, and I do keep honey on hand. Currently, Jojo won't eat much, and he's only started to eat about 75% of a can of wet food every meal time, but before he ate maybe 25%-50%. As our vet recommended, I am feeding both of our cats at 6:30 AM, and then at 6:30 PM, and our vet advised us to give insulin around that time too.

He's currently taking 1 unit of ProZinc, and we are using the Libre 3 to track his glucose, along with starting to use the Relion. I am planning on using the Libre 3 for the first few weeks alongside the Relion, just until Jojo and I get comfortable with using it. After scouring the forums on what tools I should have, I purchased the Relion premier, 100 test strips, a Relion lancing device, far too many lances, 70% rubbing alcohol for cleaning his ears or paw pads, and gauze. I have a first-aid kit to keep all his tools in a neat area, along with less risk of any damage to the products or the boxes they're in.

I have read the food chart, and truthfully I am overwhelmed looking at it. I would heavily appreciate advise on food. Honestly, I am low income, so I can't afford expensive wet food, especially when Jojo seems to have to eat a good amount of wet food due to being about 19 pounds, along with us feeding another cat, although she's only about 12 pounds. I have seen the brand Young Again Zero Mature, but that is dry food, and I am aware wet food tends to be more preferred. The other problem is Jojo is likely addicted to dry food, and in the past I have tried to add liquid to his dry food, and he would rather starve than eat dry food soaked in water or homemade chicken broth.

This has been a lot of change over the past few days, and I apologize if I gave too much information. Just for a bit of context on living situation, I am a young adult who lives with and helps take care of her mother. My mom is more than willing to help with Jojo, and she loves our two cats to death. Alongside Jojo, we have Munchkin, our little Potato Sack. We had another cat, Gigi (almost 5), and a dog, Bandit (almost 10), but tragically both passed away back in late March and early April. Both my mom and I are very willing to take in information and do what is necessary and suggested for our two cats.

It sounds like you are making good strides toward getting Jojo's diabetes regulated. If you are going to stick around the forum (and we hope you do), you'll want to start a spreadsheet to track Jojo's blood glucose tests and you'll want to set up your signature. Food: many of us here feed Fancy Feast Classic Pates. This is a low carb and reasonably priced food. Since Jojo is a kibble addict, you'll likely want to slowly introduce the wet food in with his kibble, unless he is down for eating the wet right off the bat. There are other low carb foods, but honestly, I haven't found one that is as cost efficient. The one downside to FF is that it is high in phosphorous, so if Jojo has any kidney issues, you'll want to find another alternative.

Regarding alcohol for the ears, I don't use alcohol on Jude as it can be drying and can irritate his ears. You might want to consider rice socks (I make them from baby mittens or socks) to warm the ear and increase blood flow.

I will definitely look at Fancy Feast, and I will discuss with my vet if they have seen anything concerning with his kidneys, although they haven't mentioned anything about them. I will also reconsider using the alcohol on his ears, and I will make a rice sock to test out if he tolerates it. Again, I greatly appreciate your response, thank you so much!

Oh my, what beautiful cats you have! I am terribly sorry for the recent losses you have endured! I do understand this (especially in ones so young!) I can help you with your ProZinc journey. I will read more of this thread. It could be a bit (or tomorrow.). I have multiple sick cats here and they take so much time (not to mention the feral colonies.) But I will be able to help you.

Regarding food, do you think you can afford either Fancy Feast Classic Pates or if not Friskies Pates. If your cat has kidney disease or has high phosphorus levels or it looks like the kidney values in the bloodwork are trending in the wrong direction, you may need to go for lower phosphorus foods. I can help with that too.

We all become very overwhelmed knowing our precious fur baby is diagnosed with diabetes, but no worries, it is manageable, and you are right on track doing so. Regarding the diet, diabetic cats need to have a diet of wet can or raw foods between 0-10% carbs, ProZinc is an excellent insulin, having Jojo on the CGM is great start and the fact that you are also testing with the ReliOn Premier is a plus, because the CGM tends to read lower on low numbers, fall off or malfunction, it is always good to have a couple of sensors handy just in case, so it is good to double check with the ReliOn to be sure before you feed medium or high carbs, a non-diabetic cats' glucose level is between 50-120, with ProZinc you will eventually learn how to navigate low numbers. My Corky also uses ProZinc ( see Spreadsheet below in blue), it is good to feed several meals or snack during the day this keeps the insulin in check and no free feeding plus the two main meals before shot, the protocol for ProZinc Is TEST-FEED-SHOOT. Regarding the food list, the third column contains the Carb%, most members use Fancy Feast Pates between 0-10% most feed up to 5%, Fancy Feast also has some chunky and flakes such as Chunky Chicken 4%, Trout 4%, Fish & Shrimp Flake 0%, Medleys Chicken Fare 4.5%, these are great for kibble addicts cats, any kibble or "prescribed" foods contain over 35-30% carbs. The transition from high carbs to low carbs should be a slow one, not upset Jojo's stomach, during the transition watch out for his glucose levels, since the low carbs tends to lower the BG. We are very numbers oriented, so we may all be on the same page, we would like you to create your signature and Jojo's spreadsheet, links below. Please read the sticky notes in our Main Forum, they have much valuable information, please keep posting no concern is a small one

You have done such a wonderful thing for your JoJo already! I am impressed with you starting to learn home testing too!

Oh, and yes, karo syrup and/or honey are important to keep on hand. A 3 cc syringe (oral liquid dosing syringe with no needle) is very useful to do a small karo or honey water mixture that you can squirt on the gums or into the mouth. It’s a lot less messy than trying to rub it onto the gums. Sometimes you can simply add it to some high carb food too. Some good HC food to keep on hand is Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers food. They’re high carb and most cats love them. You only need to give small amounts of HC when managing low numbers— a teaspoon at a time or a teaspoon of the gravy.

I would be able to afford Friskies Pates, and doing food calculations, Jojo wouldn't need a lot of cans like many other brands seem to require! I will be emailing his vet tomorrow, and I will ask if she has seen anything about his kidney levels. Considering she hasn't brought up his kidneys, I would hope they seem alright. I will definitely get a spreadsheet going as soon as possible. Unfortunately for me, Jojo's CGM popped off today, after four days of use. I will be getting another one tomorrow (8/31/26) so I can have that as another guide.

I am going to try and ask this without it being confusing! Because Jojo is currently getting two meals a day, could I take some of the food from those meals and put them towards snacks or other small meals throughout the day? For this example, this isn't how much Jojo is currently eating. But, say he gets 1 1/2 cans for each meal, could I split that up so he gets multiple meals throughout the day that have an even amount of food? Or, could I split it up so he gets a bit of a larger portion at 6:30 AM and PM, and then fed smaller meals throughout the day?

I apologize if that was a confusing question, and I can try to explain myself better if needed!

Yes. If you have been hanging out on the ProZinc forum at all, you will know that I recommend feeding the main meal and then a snack at +2 when the ProZinc typically onsets (starts to lower BG) and another one at +4. Whether or not to give more after this kind of depends upon the kitty. I just don’t recommend feeding after nadir if possible because it can raise BG prematurely (shorten the duration of the insulin.)

I do have a comment about your vet wanting to get the diabetes stable before the dental. Not an uncommon thing for vets to say. But unfortunately, often cats need to get that dental before the cat can get regulated. The Feline VMA (Vet Medical Association) has a statement about diabetics and dentals on their website: Diabetes Educational Toolkit

This page has a good section on common questions: FAQ. In the question "is anesthesia safe in diabetic patients" is the answer:

Uncontrolled diabetes or increased age should not be considered a reason to avoid dental care under anesthesia.

Later on it talks about dental disease interfering with diabetic control. This is fairly new content. Maybe you could share it with your vet.

Thank you for the multiple links for information! I skimmed through the page for CGMs and it has so much useful information. The Libre has been the biggest pain so far for this journey. It's constantly disconnecting and making me restart my phone, and then it screams it's alerts because it won't reconnect. But, it is nice being able to put down notes in the app.

I will definitely bring up the concern of Jojo's teeth again, as he has a really bad tooth that, from what I can remember, is being absorbed by his body due to him having not eaten enough and not getting enough nutrition, possibly caused from the diabetes. Thankfully, my vet seems very receptive to different ideas. She had originally suggested the Alphatrak3, but when I mentioned this group, and how many people use Relion, she was very open to that idea, as long as I can make sure I understand dangerous values, normal values, etc.

Corky weighs 16.5 a very large cat and I feed Fancy Feast pates 1/2can each meal and the same for Coco he's Main Coon, that's making a total of 4 cans a day, with 4 meals in total a day. Friskies are larger cans, you can put a lid on the left over can and refrigerate it, make sure to add 1 tsp of water in each meal. I purchase from CHEWY.COM by the case of 24, it is much cheaper than supermarkets, they have every selection of foods including Friskies and each can of Friskies by the case of 24 comes out to less than $0.71 a can ; example, at Publix 1 can of Fancy Feast pate is $1.04, and buying by the case of 24 each can is $0.83 each, I buy monthly, auto ship and save some more, no shipping charge, delivered in two days, you can change the date of shipping anytime, I got both cats on the same flavors, so they eat 4 different flavors a day, their palates get use to the flavors and they look forward to each meal and it works! a suggestion, I am in a very tight budget, so for me every penny counts

Always save the box of the sensor placed, if it malfunctions, you can call ABBOT, the phone number on the box, when you call for a replacement, (they are guaranteed) they will ask you for the numbers on the box, and ask some question located on your phone, do not say is for your cat or they will not replace it, it takes about 48 hours to receive the replacement, so is good to always have several sensors handy, and is a game changer you have the ReliOn as well

Just to touch on these issues, if the vet applied the original Libre with any glue, that can cause the Libre to fail quickly.
Don’t use any glue.

Are you using your own personal phone to read the sensor or do you have a dedicated phone that stays near JoJo to read the glucose?
You will want to make sure you have a dedicated phone just for him to stay at home with him and send the data to your personal phone so you know what’s happening with his glucose.
It can be an older phone as long as it’s compatible with the Libre and you don’t need a service plan on it so there’s no costs involved in that. It works on Bluetooth and WiFi.

You shouldn’t have to constantly be restarting your phone. Yes the sensor will at times not be connected and you won’t receive any data. If JoJo is out of range from the phone that will happen. Also, if the glucose is going up or down quickly, sometimes you won’t receive data until it’s stabilizes.

At night, I wrap Ivy‘s phone in some towels so that while she is sleeping, it is not screeching at her. Since I received the data on my phone, I know if something is happening that I need to be aware of with her glucose and you can also turn down the volume on your phone if you’re receiving the data, especially overnight.

Yes, I am using my personal phone. I live in an apartment, along with Jojo being horribly clingy, so I'm not usually far from him. But, I did look and I found an old phone I have, and I will be checking to see if it's compatible with the Libre app! I didn't even think about doing that, so thank you for that tip!

I will try not to restart my phone too much once I get this next one on. The app kept disconnecting from his sensor, even if he was laying down about two feet away from my phone. Yes, I am using my personal phone. I live in an apartment, along with Jojo being horribly clingy, so I'm not usually far from him. But, I did look and I found an old phone I have, and I will be checking to see if it's compatible with the Libre app! I didn't even think about doing that, so thank you for that tip!

I will try not to restart my phone too much once I get this next one on. The app kept disconnecting from his sensor, even if he was laying down about two feet away from my phone. Then it'd start to sound the alarm because it wasn't connected. It felt like a mess, but maybe it felt that way because I'm still new to using the app.

It’s very normal to not know how to use this sensor device.
I had no clue when I started.
It’s why we created that document that was linked for you yesterday. There’s so many things to know and we tried to put as much as we could think of into one place for someone who is new to using them. And they are somewhat glitchy so there’s a lot to learn.

I’ve been using them for over three years and I’m still learning. I also highly recommend if you are on Facebook joining the “freestyle Libre for dogs and cats” Group. They have tons of great information and guides on how to use a Libre.

The value of using a separate phone also is if you have to leave the house which I’m sure will happen at some point, the phone that stays at home with JoJo will send the data to your phone and that way you will know what’s happening with him at home.
Otherwise, if you leave with your phone, it can’t read him or his sensor.
