Hi, I am the owner of two sibling cats who are about to turn 16, Remy (male) and Malik (female).
Remy had lost some weight at the end of last year and after blood and urine tests his vet thought he had early renal disease so I switched him to Royal Canin Renal diet, mostly wet food. Over the last couple of months he has continued to lose weight and I noticed he was very wobbly on his hind legs so the vet came over last week and today I was told he has diabetes.
On the other hand, his sister Malik (who has hyperthyroidism) now shows early signs of kidney disease.
I am very scared and confused about the future of my precious cats. Malik will need to stay on the renal diet but I believe renal diet, even if it's wet food, will not be good for Remy. I have a follow up appointment with his vet this Friday so she can show me how to start him on insulin. He has a very healthy appetite and the vet said we could leave them both on the wet Royal Canin renal food and control his diabetes with the insulin.
I have just ordered a glucose meter so I can eventually test Remy's blood sugar levels but I don't even know where to start or what "normal" level should be.
I'm sorry if I sound flustered but I just want to ensure I'm doing the best thing for my cats.
Thank you for reading.
