It's been almost three days since I've asked for advice. WOW. I wasn't able to test her today at +6 or +7, but at +8 she was 225. and yesterday she was 307 at +7. I'm worried that her BG isn't coming down between shots. It's about a half hour till testing time, shot time and dinner #1. I plan to keep her at her same dose tonight unless someone suggests something new. We're on the third day at .06.

We miss you when you don't ask for advice. I agree she could come down more midcycle. I'd say, when you can sure monitor, try the .8 again.

It shows you feed after the shot and midcycle. I wonder if it might make a difference to offer some small snacks between those times? It's one of those Every Cat is Different things. Some cats do better eating every 4 hours or so. Some do fine with twice a day.

Tomorrow will be a good day for monitoring, .8 and see what that brings. She seems to be feeling great. Purr-master.

Lucy down midcycle the today and yesterday since going up to .8. Does this look good? Should I stick (sorry Lucy, no pun intended) with this for a day or so?

I think the numbers look good with this dose. I'd stick with it. Can you get any night-cycle numbers over the weekend?

Carl

Hmmm,

+3 or +4 gives you sneak peek into what the cycle might look like. If you see a good drop by +4, it can give you a head's up on what the nadir might be.
+5 to +7 catches the nadir, in theory.
+9 or +10 gives you an idea of how long the dose lasts.

+3, +6 and +9 would be ideal, but that's a lot to ask for when you're supposed to be sleeping.
One night you could do one or two mid-cycles, and the next a different two times than the first night.
That can fill in a lot of blanks without causing sleep deprivation!

Carl

Good intentions, but I wasn't able to test more than once during the evening, on Friday night.
PMPS 264
+4 299
This morning
AMPS 395, I decided to up her dose from .8 to 1
+6 is 426
I was hoping she was going to settle into that .8 dose, but it's looking worse! What should I do? She's never had a reading that high in the middle of the day.

ADVICE PLEASE!

She eats Fancy Feast Beef Classic. Yesterday she had a few Wellness Pure Delights Turkey and Salmon Jerky treats. Nothing else.

Sometimes when the dose is too high, it causes an inverse curve, when the number is higher midcycle than preshot. I am not sure that is what is happening, but it could be.

Is there any chance she got into dry food or something else high carb? Did you take a second test in case it was a bad reading?

I would finish out this cycle and if the numbers still are in a higher range, go back down to 1.4 or 1.6 to see if you get lower numbers.

There is no chance she got into dry food, there isn't a morsel in our house.
She did lick an Activia yogurt container, around +1 or +2. There was just the tiniest bit on the top rim, I did a pretty good job of cleaning it up myself before I set it on the counter. Could this have had an effect?
I didn't take a second test. Do bad readings happen often? I'll go down and test her right now! Get ready Lucy.
Going down sounds backwards to me, I wish I hadn't changed her dose this morning without advice.

Do you mean finish out this cycle at 1? Inverse curve, oh how will I ever get to understand this?

I'm working on making a profile for Lucy right now. Instead of doing all the chores I have on my list.

Took second test, three hours later it's 325, then they got to eat another round of FF. How long does this feeding influence the numbers? My PMPS time is in 2 1/2 hours.

I am OBSESSING big time today.

Should I wait till PMPS to decide dose?

The weather is gorgeous, it's a Sunday, and I'm sitting here at my computer trying to figure out how to make a profile page. Husband out on a bike ride. What's wrong with this picture?

Ha Ha! Super: a laugh out loud is just what I needed, thanks! Charts, keyboard, paperwork OUTAHERE. Here are the pictures of Lucy and Petey I was about to include on my profile page that is now abandoned.

The pic of them "hugging" is priceless! Yes, no obsessing allowed on a bright and sunny day!

Profiles are a "nice to have", not a "need to have" thing. Do one when you have some spare time....you'll see that in about 15 months, I haven't had any spare time.

And don't worry about the inverse curve thing, not yet. I'm a big fan of what Dr. Lisa posted here last year, when several of us were obsessing.... she said that when it comes to a decision on dose, or anything important, we should look for "repeatability" before making a decision. Today's cycle could just be an aberration. That could have been a bad test for whatever reason. It does happen on occasion. Bad strip, too much or too little blood, etc.

I would stick with the dose you shot this morning. If the same thing happens again, then we can help you reevaluate the dosage.

Try to take this 12 hours at a time, but at the same time, don't get all caught up with something that happens inside of that 12 hour window. Big picture is important, trends are important. One data point is just that....one data point.

Now ride like the wind and catch up to your husband!
Carl

Notice that they are hugging, but in their separate boxes.
I can't see a repeatability or trend at this point, or even a big picture! I'm trying to get a handle on it.
I'll repeat this morning's dose tonight.
Maybe I"m switching her dose around too much ARRGGGGHHHHH

Okay, it's time for this annoying phrase - feline diabetes is a marathon, not a sprint. She didn't get diabetes overnight; you can't fix it overnight. Your job right now is to collect some data and keep her in safe numbers while her body adjusts to the insulin. When you start seeing some patterns that help you figure out good doses, you adjust and readjust. It's a process and she's a cat, so it's her job to make it complicated.

.2 units won't make the difference between life and death or even comfort or discomfort. You are not blindly shooting insulin into her. You are keeping her in safe numbers. That's your job and you are doing it beautifully.

And remember, she doesn't know she has diabetes. She just knows she has yummy new food and Mom is paying more attention to her and she is getting extra treats. Surely we have shared this with you:

The pictures are wonderful!

Lecture well taken. I can't fix it today or tomorrow. I do want to do the best job I can. I just reread the thread you referenced

It's hard to step back, but I certainly need to.
