Posted in the Levemir/Lantus forum but doesn't seem many people there have used these.

My stash of Levemir pens is running out and I need to get my Rx refilled. While I was pricing, I learned that they have new pen - the FlexTouch - which is replacing the Flexpens. Before I refill I just wanted to make sure that you can still access the insulin with a syringe where the needle is usually attached.

It seemed that the design change was more in the other end of the pen, but can anyone confirm that the 'needle' end is still the same?

Thanks!!

From what I have read and seen the new pen is not different than the old pen with regard to drawing insulin out of the pen-needle end. The new pen has no push-button extension when used with pen needles.

Remember - you don't want to purchase or use the needles that go with those pens - rather you want to buy insulin syringes and treat the pen like a mini vial - which it is.

Hi there. I am new and wanted to know why you recommend drawing the insulin out of the pen and not using the needles that go with the pen. My vet says to use the needles that go with it but this is the first time they are using the pen and I have also seen videos that show drawing the insulin out of the pen. Thanks!

The pens only shoot in 1 unit increments. We adjust doses in 0.25 to 0.5 unit increments so we don't miss an optimal dose.

And welcome to FDMB.

Great - thank you! This is the first time my vet is using the pen with a cat and he thought the needles came with the Solostar pen. I told him no and the needle tips are expensive and that people use U-100 syringes to draw the insulin out of the pen. They were actually able to give me several hundred U-100 syringes that someone had donated after their cat passed. So thank you!
