I'm thinking of adopting a new companion for my 10 month old make civie. He is extremely energetic and my 17-year old diabetic just never wants to play. I've read so many things about who would be best. Male, femal, same age, younger, older. Anybody have good advice?

Gustav was one and a half years old when he got Simba back then at 6 months old. I had a female then too, who was 6 years old when I brought home the first baby at 8 weeks old. But he only became 1 year old, and shortly after then when my female was 7, I got Gustav at 6 months age. But the best buddies have been Gustav and Simba, they both were young and liked to play, wrestle and do all sorts of stuff with eachother.

I wouldnt do it but thats just me. I figure a 17 y/o cat is set in his ways. Maybe if you adopted two younger cats to keep each other busy. But one may just torment your older friend. That of course is JMO.
Good luck
j.

i have a almost 12 yr old civvie that i am planning on getting a new friend for in a few months since we lost our patches 2 weeks ago, my plan is i am most likely getting a under 1 yr old because molly still runs and plays like a kitten and since patches was diagnosed 3 yrs ago and even when he was off his insulin he just never got back to playing like they used to. i am planning on a male since patches was and they got along so well...when i got patches he was 6months and i got molly not long after and she was 6 weeks

i am curious how this will play out, i thought getting a younger cat means a bit of a blank slate no chips on their shoulders with what life so far gave them...

so i am with you with this one with the curiosity

good luck!

om goodness,
what a question....my civvie Slappy is 16 this yr. My Gumpy (GA) was 14 and Sugar Bean is 9 this year.

When Gumpy went to the bridge this last July, I had to get another friend for Bean. She was soo depressed. I did not know what to do. Bean at 8, Slappy at 15???

I decided on a 6 wk old little girl! WOW!

She keeps Bean on her toes, probably too much and total leaves Slappy alone.

But, I have thought about a smaller one for 'Ittle Sista' as she plays constantly and Bean does not want to play that much..

I decided on a baby because I did not want the older ones to have to worry about pecking order. It has worked out great...momma bean has not had a baby in the house for 8-9 yrs. so it is probably harder on me than them. Come home from work and cabinets are opened, stuff all over the floors - lol , etc.

We are learning the word "NO", BUT, she is sooo spoiled it is just terrible....she will only be little for a small bit so yes, she gets away with alot.

Slappy just ignores her, and Bean puts her in her place quick and to the point. Bean is much more active since she has been here. The one thing I did do was to talk to the adoption agency and ask for a 'lone' kittie to make sure Bean would not be under so much stress that her numbers went crazy. We got that 'lone' for 3 weeks. Well, heck, after 3 days, Ittle Sista was in this family like no other!
And Bean has been just fine, numbers, attitude and all.

Good luck with your decision, sending furry paw hugs your way!

Ohbell,
I know what you mean about having a baby in the house again. I adopted Mo at 10 weeks old (he’s now 10 months)to have a companion for my 17-year old diabetic Timmy after her sister passed last spring. My thinking was that a baby male would be non-threatening and she might feel motherly towards him. Well, that didn’t work out. Timmy tolerates Mo, but she doesn’t want to have anything to do with him. He’s the most energetic cat I’ve ever had. I’ve already put slip covers on a couple of pieces of furniture from scratching, and he’s finally stopped climbing the curtains. I learned quickly that “No!” sounds too much like Mo, so I say STOP!! Of course all of my giggling means he doesn’t take me seriously. I play with him every night, but I know he’s still kinda lonely and bored when I’m at work. He sometimes jumps up and wraps himself around my leg when I get home as if to say, “You’re home!” I was thinking of getting a female kitten around 6 months old to be his buddy, but my husband is more in line with your thinking in that we should get another baby that has a clean slate. Considering this is another 15-20 year commitment, I don’t want to make the wrong choice. It’s exciting, though. I’m sorry about your Gumpy, and sorry about Patches, too, bradie. I still cry over losing Timmy’s sister Billy (I’m tearing up right now). I’m just hoping another baby will keep Mo company (and me too) and keep him from tormenting my poor old Timmy. She’s still my baby girl.

LOL to you terwilliger1!
I thought it was just me! Ittle Sista has got soo much energy and I just dont remember the other 3 being like this, but I used to have lots of energy too!

However, I am teaching her to sit up on her hind legs when it is time for her treat - I say, "say please", and she sits up on her hind legs, wraps her hand around mine and takes the treat........PRICELESS! Along with her bringing me her favorite toy, speaking as she drops it at my feet and she fetches for a bit.

Worth all the cabinets opened and stuff everywhere, blinds broken and new couch scratches! - ok, almost worth it ;-)
