Hello
I am Andi and so am blind I have a ferile cat name Cosmo who is my best friend. He became diabetic. About 8 weeks ago. Is on lantus 2 u am and pm. He was on a sliding scale but still was all over.
He is 9.5 lbs and maintaining nice
His royal canin he eats one and a half cans twice a day a day with Rc glyco kibble for treats .
He has Hx of kidney utis frequent.
I have not slept much since he was diagnosed as I am afraid of him needing me. He went to special vet and got ultrasound ok and a cgm monitor which worked well for 9 days but showed him all over his lows are usually 9 am to -2 then he starts climbing till insulin 2 nd dose at 4 pm. His second glucose monitor he ripped off as the dr but it too far back and that caused infection. If you need help I am pretty versed with them now.
He was 70 and 65 2 morns last week and over 500 2 eves. The rest of time was 300 to 400
He was 180yesterday and that was his sweet spot would like to get him there.this morn was 600.
Please if someone could help I having trouble posting as being blind it is all read to me.
I have help at home but my husband is worn out over all of this. I need help regulating him.

Hi, and welcome to the site. I am glad you have a monitor to test Cosmo's blood glucose. We each have spreadsheets where we keep track of our cat's blood glucose data which allows other members to look at and advise us on dosing information.

Perhaps you can upload data from your monitor so we can have a look at it to help.

Also you mentioned feeding Royal Canin wet food, that may be too high in carbohydrates for a diabetic cat, which may account for Cosmo's high numbers. But be careful because once you switch you may end to adjust the insulin dose.

Here is a pdf of nutritional information of various cat foods. We want to feed a diabetic cat less than 10 percent carbohydrates, ideally 4 to 7 percent carbohydrates. Also with a history of UTIs low phosphorus foods would be ideal. The pdf also has phosphorus amounts.

Hello
Thank you so much
I will check into it. codmo is on a vet prescribed glucose diet by royal canin wet. Has 1.5 carbs and not sure about phosphorus but it has the so to prevent crystals which he has a problem with
Do you order th wechobea from a website?
When he is low he has not been symptomatic so I am always worried.
He does not walk drunk or shake or
Dr well in the 50 area which has made me so nervous. Is there any other way to tell when he is low?
Meh is my little. Any and I would gladly take the illness for him if I could. I am sad he has a blind mom. This so great here I just wish I could see to navigate better.

Hello Chris and checkers

thank you for the reply.
Cosmo is on the royal canin vet diet for diabetics the glyco wet diet. It has 1.5 carbs per can and has the so for his crystals in it. i not sure about the phos but will call.
I will check into the other food too

Your checkers is way better controlled than Cosmo. I have tried to do the spreadsheets but struggle with not seeing so do by hand I could upload them if there is a place?
He goes low quite often then high. he is not symptomatic when low No Drewll no unsteady just sleepy which can. E his usual lol.I don’t sleep as I am afraid. We go to the vet about 2 or 3 times a week trying to keep him stable.
I count everything that goes in his mouth even took him off the probiotic cause they can’t tell me the carb count.
He was188 yesterday and it was a great day!!! The best ever if I could keep him there????
I am so worried about his sugar at night I wake every hour or so. The dr says ferile cats are very hard to control. Most of the time they are not pets. He is my best friend and I cannot imagine my life without him.
whazever you have to offer I will read and learn thank you

If you upload the data from the CGM someone here can setup a spreadsheet for you. Also you can buy Weruva at pets stores like Chewy's or other places that sell better quality pet food.

I also worry about hypos, there is some very good information in this link for what to do if that happens. Also the symptoms to look out for. When Checkers goes below 50 he starts yelling at me to feed him but every cat is different.

https://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/how-to-treat-hypos-they-can-kill-print-this-out.15887/

Does the CGM have an alarm that goes off if Cosmo's blood sugar goes below a certain point, that would be very handy.

Also, it does take time for cats to become regulated. And with some cats if their blood sugar goes lower like 60-70 their bodies aren't use to this so they dump sugar so the next few days their readings are high. Checkers does this and it is very frustrating.

Feel free to ask as many questions as you need. We all love our kitties and want the best for them.

Hello and welcome to you and sweet Cosmo. The dose of 2 units is too high for Cosmo. Since you are feeding a little bit of dry food for treats, our dosing methods would have you reduce the dose if you see a number below 90, which you are seeing. Are you using the Lantus pen needles or syringe to give the insulin? Most of us here use syringes so we can give smaller doses. But that might be a challenge to you unless your husband is helping give the insulin. I think I'd recommend going to 1.5 units twice a day if you can do that.

The key to helping prevent crystals is low carb food with plenty of water. I used to add water to the wet food. Probiotics are generally OK to give, unless they have sugars or starches in them.

One of the common signs that they are going low is a sudden need for food. It's like they recognize it will help get their numbers higher.

Hi Chris and checkers
Regarding the cgm. It s a nice tool but only lasts about 9 days. It is a good curve tool. Under 100 it does not measure you have to get blood. Over 500 it says hi so you have to get a blood glucose. He pulled the last one off as it was placed too low. Caused an infection and still healing they must be put by the scapula or they can get to them. That has set us back for about a month.
I would think twice to put another on. was 200 for the sensor and reader and 300 to put on. I have to still have him in a short due to he will get to the wound and also he wore it when the monitor was on.
Is your spreadsheet available at this site?

Hello Wendy and Nemo
I use syringes my husband draws them up for me. He is really over it all. I am afraid to rest. I do all of the caregiving. It is very hard when you cannot see what your lived one looks like. I go get my husband often.
I also add water to the canned food.he won’t drink unless he is high glucose. The high symptoms I have down but he is so hard to tell when low. He does not want anyone to know he is sick and makes it really hard.
we will drop him down to the 1.5
that is where we were but he was high in the afternoons so they increased him. It seems 2 is too much and 1.5 not enough he is constantly changing. Our dr says sometimes they cannot be controlled I am not giving up. I know there is a way. He had a great day yesterday we took his blood when he was feeling great it was 188.
The dr also had him on a sliding scale and he still was all over. The sight won’t let me upload his stats it says I do not have authorization
Here is the past week

Let's see how he does on the 1.5 units for a few days. If you have syringes with 1/2 unit marks on them, then it's possible to do a dose partway between 1.5 and 2.0 that we call 1.75 units. I'd do that before going up to 2 units again if we think he needs to increase again.

Some cats will go higher at the vets due to stress, so testing there is not a reliable way of seeing how a cat is doing on a given dose.

How do I contact bandits mom? Can someone send me a link or instructions. I am blind and sites are challenging for me but I will get it. Please everyone forgive me if typos or I don’t click or send something right. I do everything by speech.
I thank you all. My boy is my best friend and I am willing to do anything for him!!!
I have been studying so hard since he was diagnosed. I am so grateful to find this site.

Hello Andi! Welcome to FDMB! :-)
I can help set up your spreadsheet and signature. Will send you a PM with the details I need. Look for it in the Inbox at the top right corner of this page.

You are doing great!

Thank you for tagging Brandi’s mom
Just took cosmos blood sugar he is 502
He was acting really funny shacking his head and mosning like all new usually high glucose he is fussy
And pee pee and drink and eat
His insulin is due at 4 am
Do you think I should give at 3 a bit early
And do 1.5 or 2
I am trying to use the urine as much as we can I dip someone reads for me or I send the strip to a friend to read for me my husband does the blood for m
Is difficult cause of being ferile he is missing most of one ear so that one is full of scar tissue we have one good ear so I try to be careful it is hard because he has been so up and down.
One day he went from 50 to 680..
That is why we went to the Siecialust fir the monitor and ultrasound and tons of blood work . The monitor showed the same. Now I am worried about food glyco is still unavailable after 4 weeks!! Only the dry which has double the carbs.th the wet glyco has 1.5 carbs per can he eats 3.5 cans a day Roughly 10 carbs. I listened to the food chart which is the best? He likes chicken.

Any of the low carbs wet foods are good. Pick ones you think he will like.
I would not give the dose earlier than the normal shot time. @Wendy&Neko suggested staying with 1.5 units for a few days to see how he goes so I would do that.
Once the spreadsheet is up and running we will have a better idea of what is happening.

Thank you so much 1.5 it us
He is 500 right now he was acting funny so my husband took bs was 502
I get up early to get his meds as he will not eat late afternoon he was a moshed before this and has been quite the transition.
I so appreciate all of you helping save him.
I know we can!
