Hi there, I just wanted to introduce myself since I'm new here.
My cat Hercules was diagnosed in December 2009, it was a really close call and I would have got him looked at sooner if I had known what I was seeing were diabetes symptoms. It quickly progressed to the point where he was pretty much immobile so I ended up taking him to the emergency clinic, hoping for a miracle (as in they'd have a quick fix, work there vet magic and he'd be back to himself instantly.) Instead, I learned just how sick he was. What really got me was how quickly things changed, one day he was his normal self, but within a day and a half he was hooked up to IV and being kept almost a week in the hospital.
I won't lie - if I'd known before hand what he would go through for that week I probably wouldn't have put him through it, but after just one night he was starting to show a little bit of improvement, so it became a matter of not putting him through that one night of stress for nothing. I have no doubt things worked out the way they were supposed to though, because as an outsider you'd never know that he'd been so sick, or even that he has diabetes, and his quality of life is really good too.
He's been on and off insulin since then, but right now he gets it twice a day - 1/4 unit but he's been drinking lots of water, urinating lots, and his last test results were high (I do home testing), so I'm waiting for word back from the vet on what to do next. That's how I ended up here, I got impatient and was googling how much insulin to give based on his results, but there doesn't seem to be a concrete answer. He is on a controlled wet food diet, fed twice a day.
He and my other cat are pretty spoiled, and I'm sure I'm not the only one here who does that .
Anyway, I was happy to stumble upon this community, and I'll post a picture of Hercules in my avatar as soon as I figure out how to get the dimensions small enough!
