Hi there, I just wanted to introduce myself since I'm new here.

My cat Hercules was diagnosed in December 2009, it was a really close call and I would have got him looked at sooner if I had known what I was seeing were diabetes symptoms. It quickly progressed to the point where he was pretty much immobile so I ended up taking him to the emergency clinic, hoping for a miracle (as in they'd have a quick fix, work there vet magic and he'd be back to himself instantly.) Instead, I learned just how sick he was. What really got me was how quickly things changed, one day he was his normal self, but within a day and a half he was hooked up to IV and being kept almost a week in the hospital.

I won't lie - if I'd known before hand what he would go through for that week I probably wouldn't have put him through it, but after just one night he was starting to show a little bit of improvement, so it became a matter of not putting him through that one night of stress for nothing. I have no doubt things worked out the way they were supposed to though, because as an outsider you'd never know that he'd been so sick, or even that he has diabetes, and his quality of life is really good too.

He's been on and off insulin since then, but right now he gets it twice a day - 1/4 unit but he's been drinking lots of water, urinating lots, and his last test results were high (I do home testing), so I'm waiting for word back from the vet on what to do next. That's how I ended up here, I got impatient and was googling how much insulin to give based on his results, but there doesn't seem to be a concrete answer. He is on a controlled wet food diet, fed twice a day.

He and my other cat are pretty spoiled, and I'm sure I'm not the only one here who does that .

Anyway, I was happy to stumble upon this community, and I'll post a picture of Hercules in my avatar as soon as I figure out how to get the dimensions small enough!

Hi, and glad you finally found us!

You're already home testing, and feeding canned (Low carb?) food, so that's awesome. And his dose is tiny compared to many others.
Just one question....what type of insulin?

Carl

Welcome to you and Hercules. He is showing signs of not enough insulin if he is urinating and drinking more and getting high test results. Please consider taking him in to the vet for further testing, you don't want a repeat of his initial diagnosis. He could have an infection somewhere, such as his teeth, which is causing the higher blood glucose.

Keep us posted. We're here to help. Good job on giving him low carb wet food and hometesting his BGs!

Thanks all! The doctor advised me to increase to 1/2 unit and retest in 2 days.

Carl and Bob: He is on the Lantus, and his food is low carb, dietetic management, I think it's by Purina.

Welcome Katherine and extra sweet Hercules!

I'm a bit puzzled by your statement above...when do you test his BG levels? Waiting 2 days to test after an increase is putting your baby in jeopardy of going too low on a new higher dose and your not knowing he's 'hypoglycemic'. When increasing, it's very important to test during each cycle. I test 4-5 times a day even when I know KT is probably still high BECAUSE when his numbers DO start dropping, he sometimes drops 150-200 points like a rock. If I don't slow that drop, his liver will panic and release MORE sugar...and we'll ride a roller coaster for a bit. Some people test less, some test more...it's all according to THE CAT!

HUGS!!!

When you get the chance, read the info stickies on the Lantus board to understand how the insulin works for cats: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewforum.php?f=9

Are you using half unit marked insulin syringes?

You don't need the prescription canned food at all. The ingredients are really junky, worse than some inexpensive commericl foods, and costs a lot. Many cats get bored of eating it afterwhile, too. Yon can return the unopened food to the vet for a refund, just say your cat won't eat it anymore.

Use these charts and lists to find a better commerical canned food:

Binky's canned food charts
Pet Food Nutritional Values list
Hobo's Guide To Nutritional Values
Dr. Lynne's Wet Food list
List of low carb gluten free Fancy Feast

On Binky's charts, stick with foods that have a number 10 or less in the carbs colum. On the Pet Food Nutritional Values Chart and Hobo's Guide, look at the %kcal from carbs column and choose foods that have a number 10 or less.

I've read through the thread and I don't see where you are HOME-testing. What meter do you use if you are?

Otherwise- you can buy a human meter from any pharmacy, the meters are usually cheap to get you to use their strips- so buy one with strips in your price range. Relion Micro or Confirm is at Wal-mart for $9 and the strips run $36 for 100. Bayer is another good brand, no idea on the strip costs. Stay away from anything with TRUE in the name or the freestyle meters that use the butterfly strips as they read anything over 250 incorrectly.

For a beginner, get the 26 or 28 gauge lancets (31 usually comes with your meter but they are too small for starting out- you need the bigger lancet for a bigger hole. U-tube has great videos to watch on how to test, granted the first week you might not get the right drop of blood but consistency is the key- once you get it you get it and the two of you can relax. Give treats, it helps for them to associate the poke with a yummy nom-nom that they only get at that time.
