Hello. My kitty Carl was diagnosed in Feb with Diabetes. We were on PZI and have just switched as of Tuesday to Lantus. We were getting no results with the PZI and were up to 5u every 12hrs so I am hoping this will help.
Some info.
Carl is about 10yrs old, he gets 2u every 12hrs, eats Royal Canin Adult wet food. I did a check just before his shot at 10pm and we were at 476. Im going to check him again at 12 before I go to bed and then get a few spots tomorrow and then the vet wants a 12hr done on Tuesday to see if we need to up his dose or what to do.

Has anyone had a cat not react before. If he doesnt respond to this insulin she wants me to take him to a specialist, which is great and all but not possible since I cant afford it. I can barely afford his food and meds as is. I just dont know what to do if he doesnt respond.

Hi Amy & Carl and welcome,

You will get the help you are looking for here, but the people who are very knowledgeable about dosing will want to know more of Carl's background. From your spreadsheet it looks as if you did a lot of jumping around with regard to dose. You will discover that Lantus dosing is very different from PZI and that consistency is the key to success. Please be sure to read all of the information "stickies" at the top of the Lantus forum, starting with the one "New to the Group". You will learn the basics of the Tight Regulation Protocol we use here (and which has had much success; but which requires patience), and how to handle Lantus (dos and don'ts). Perhaps tomorrow you could tell us what Royal Canin food you are feeding Carl, whether he has other health issues, etc. Also how your vet arrived at his present dose. It is pretty late tonight for you to get much feedback, so do open a new thread (we call them "condos") tomorrow and tell us more about Carl.

Thanks Ella and Rusty. I will try and do just that in the morning. I do have more background to share. I just wanted a break from homework so I posted up here while I had a minute. Carl has really put myself and him through a lot over the last year but I switched to a new vet and I feel more confident that we can get somewhere now!

Welcome to Lantus Land!

What I suspect is that the Royal Canin is relatively high in carbohydrates. The higher the carbs in the food your feeding, the harder the insulin has to work to overcome the carbs in the food and the less that's available to lower blood glucose. Most of us feed low carb, canned food. Low carb is under 10% carbs and the majority of people here will feed 5% or less. Janet & Binky's food charts has information on carbs for most of the major brands and covers a broad price range. You might want to consider changing your brand of food and seeing what effect this has on Carl's numbers.

When you have a chance, it would be helpful to know what your blood glucose tests have looked like on PZI and now on Lantus. If no one has directed you to the spreadsheets we use, this is the link to the info on getting the spreadsheet set up.
 
you've gotten lots of good information so i'll just say welcome! you're in the right place to get help for Carl now. All of us do feline diabetes 24/7 and some people here have years worth of experience. We're all in it together and we understand how frustrating it is before your kitty gets regulated. Lantus is a good insulin and hopefully you'll be seeing Carl improving quickly.

Welcome to Lantus Land! You and Carl will get some wonderful help from all the people here. If it hadn't been for this site, I wouldn't have known what to do with Simon when he was diagnosed in November 2010. The only advice I have since I am not an expert, is to be cautious when bringing Carl in for a curve on Tuesday. The bg numbers are usually higher at the vet than at home due to the cat being stressed. That is what happened to me and Simon. We did a curve and his numbers were very high so the vet upped his insulin to 4 units (he started at 3 units). I had not started hometesting until a day after he started on the 4 units. When I tested him the next day, he was only 40 and this was at his PMPS so if I had listened to the vet, I would have pumped 4 units into Simon and he probably would have hypo'd overnight. On the advice of everyone here, I reduced his dose to 1 unit 2x/day and he has been doing well ever since. He is now on .50 units so I never had to up his insulin again. I hope the Lantus is the best insulin for Carl and you get great results. Welcome again!

Sylvan and I just switched from Prozinc to Lantus 3 days ago.
So far he's been adjusting well and we've found lots of help and support over here.

My Simon switched to Lantus from Caninsulin 10 days ago and has been doing great,
and I'm sure Carl will too. You came to the right place :-D
 
Welcome to Lantus Land! It's great to have you here and as you've already seen, lots of people are here to help you out.

What kind of food are you feeding Carl? Changing to low carb wet made a huge difference. After being on dry for 11 years, Junior wasn't fond of canned at first. Now he loves it and what's even better is that he prefers Fancy Feast over high end brands. Much more affordable for us!

Morning, Amy and Carl, and welcome! :) You've definitely come to the right place. Blackie was switched to Lantus last year, and is doing very well on it. Before that, we were using ProZinc, and weren't getting any good results. I think you'll enjoy seeing the results when using Lantus. As another poster mentioned, the higher carbed food could be the result of the higher #s that you're seeing. Take a look at Janet and Binky's page at the different foods, and go from there. It's a lot to take in, I know. This group is wonderful. If you have any questions at all, just holler and someone will be around to help. :)
