Hello,
My 14 (almost 15) year old cat was diagnosed with diabetes on Friday. This is actually my second diabetic cat; my old Siamese mix was diagnosed about 18 years ago, and we did insulin shots and prescription food (W/D) for two years. Things have changed a bit since then, I am learning. Now insulin is twice a day (and the price has CHANGED(!!)) and the food's lo-carb rather than high-carb/high-fiber.

Junga's BG was 340; no ketones in his urine. I don't recall if there was sugar in his urine. Junga had been eating a hypoallergenic dry food -- we aren't sure what he's allergic to, but most likely corn, maybe most grains, and possibly chicken. The chicken may be an intolerance rather than an allergy; when he was last eating a chicken-containing food he threw up every day. I consulted with the vet on Friday via phone, picked up the insulin (Lantus), syringes, and the best low-carb canned food I could find on short notice (Blue Wilderness and By Nature) all on Friday evening. I had my shot lesson Sat. a.m. at the vet's. The vet has started Junga on 2 units twice a day; I questioned him about hypoglycemia, and he said that 2 is starting low, but told me what to watch for and to get some corn syrup.

So far so good in the insulin; Junga is totally unfazed by the shot; we could be models for youtube videos. He seems to be feeling a little better.

My questions so far: I plan to pick up a glucose meter soon; I gather the Walmart Relion meter is a good choice. Anything I need to look out for?

Also, I see spreadsheets here. Seems like a good way to record values, but i don't see a key. Is there a FAQ on the spreadsheet?

On food: I'm having a little difficulty figuring out which canned food to get, given Junga's possible chicken allergy. The vet isn't in favor of fish, and I don't think Junga likes fish anyway. So far Junga LOVES the EVO 95% duck (at nearly $3/can for 6 oz.!), and the Blue Wilderness duck, but those are super high in fat. He ate the By Nature 95% Turkey and Liver entree, but I can't find carb ratings for that. It's meat, liver, and a little vegetable gum, so it should be okay, but it would be nice to know. He doesn't like Merrick Cowboy Cookout; yesterday and today I tried that, and ended up smearing some duck cat food on top if it to get him to even try a bit. He seems to object to both the smell and to the chunkiness. Possibly he doesn't like beef.

So, any suggestions for a pate-style, not-chicken, not-fish, grain-free, high protein, canned food that Junga might like for which we have carb amounts?

j.

I'm not up to snuff on advice giving but there will be others to welcome you.
If you havent already read the FaQ's it's a good place to start.

Welcome!

Janet & Binky's food chart is here: http://www.felinediabetes.com/diabetic-cat-diets.htm. You will find a number of brands (Friskies, Fancy Feast, etc.), and varieties that are low carb. Hopefully Junga will find foods he likes and that like him.

Many people here get their glucometers at Wal Mart and the strips (which is where the real expense comes in) are reasonably priced.

Here is a link that will help you set up your spread sheet: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=18207.

You will likely have many questions...please post back and we'll do our best to help and support you and Junga.

Welcome! Glad you found the board...there's tons of fabulous info here, so browse around and read all of the stickies! You've been through this before, so some of what's below might be old hat, but just in case you need a refresher, here's some info...

Here is the link about setting up your spreadsheet: Setting up a SS

Here's one about setting up a profile: Setting up a profile

Lots of people use the Relion meter, so you're good there. From what I hear, the Relion strips are the least expensive. When do you think you'll be able to start testing? You'll hear from lots of folks that home testing is a critical component when dealing with a diabetic kitty. We ALWAYS test before shooting...it's the only way to know that you're shooting safely (i.e., that numbers aren't too low, potentially leading to a hypo situation). The general consensus here is to start low and go slow...mostly the recommendation is to start at 1u BID (twice a day). The caveat to that would be if there were a concern about ketones. It's a good idea to pick up some ketostix as well, so that you can test for ketones at home. You can get them at your local drugstore; they're kept behind the pharmacy counter. One thing to note is that BGs taken at the vet's are generally going to be higher, as it's a more stressful environment and stress will elevate the numbers. Home testing is for sure the way to go....and will save you a ton of $$ not having to take your kitty in for BG curves.

As far as food goes, I fed my girl Fancy Feast (FF) wet food. Here is a link with lots of food info: Nutrition and Diet Links. I'm not sure about the allergy thing, but the list of low carb (LC) foods is pretty extensive, so you should have options. The goal is to only feed food that has less than 10% carbs. I solely fed my girl food that was less than 5% carbs.

Make sure to read the sticky about hypo situations. You'll want to stock up on some high carb (HC) food and karo syrup just in case. Best to be prepared, so you're not faced with a hypo situation and scrambling to sort it out...this has definitely happened to me.

Ok...I think that's enough for now...don't want to overwhelm you! (probably too late!) Be sure to ask lots of questions. The amount of knowledge that folks bring to this board is immeasurable. Welcome and best wishes!

Maybe he'll like the FF turkey & giblets. I'll have to double-check the ingredients the next time I'm at the pet store. Does anybody know if that's a pate-style food? He seems to object to chunks.

That's where I got ours tonight. No luck with getting a blood droplet, though. I'll try again tomorrow. He's done with sitting still for tonight. It may be that I need to buy larger lancets. I was using the lancet pen and lancets that came with the Relion Confirm and really had no luck at all -- not even a little droplet. I even warmed his ear first (he liked that part.)

Could you tell me how to use the spreadsheet? I figure 'U' is units, AM and PM must refer to morning and night.... how does one use the color coding? I can see that the colors refer to ranges, but how does one set the color in a box? Is that automatic when one puts the number in?

Thanks. I do, and I'm sure I'll have more.

For the spread sheet, you will see AMPS (AM pre-shot), PMPS (PM pre-shot), and U (units of insulin). You will see column headers of +1, +2, etc., and these are the hours post-shot. So you would enter the AMPS glucose level at, for example, 6:00 a.m. +1 would be 7:00 a.m., +2 would be 8:00 a.m., etc. Since the goal is for each insulin injection to be effective for 12 hours, the column headers continue to +12, then PMPS.

The colors are there for ease of reading the SS, and fill in automatically. There is also a column on the far right for any notes you would like to make relating to matters that would impact Junga's BG levels.

If Junga just isn't going to let you mess with his ears anymore (I have one like that!), you can also use his paw pads.

Welcome! :)

My cat Khan has allergys and to what? unknown.. but both steroid shots 4 yrs apart put him in the hospital. The second round he was diagnosed with diabetes.. I found this site months later -thank goodness!! I fed Fancy Feast Savory Salmon in the pink can off Binky's list- no grain.. Only fed that for a while to simplify things. Khan's belly and inside of both legs-bald as a baby's butt, his face scratched up very badly along with his ears. then after being at the vet with BG curves his neck was shaved, he had lost 6 1/2 pounds.. he was not in good shape..so simplify- keep it to one food.. I then added Fancy feast turkey and giblets and have not had any issues. Yesterday I added EVO 95% Venison.. and he scratched some. Once you have the testing down, Spreadsheet up for experienced FDMB members to review and provide recommendations- then maybe go with two different foods (that is my recommendation)-if your cat really had severe allergy issues. Khan does well with the Fancy Feast Seafood 24 can 3 flavor box..all are listed on blinky's list. I know some say don't feed seafood more than 1-2 times a wk due to mercury issues.. well that was the least of my worries..plus it really depends on where the fish is harvested and processed.--Anyway-least of my worries-- for me .. I wanted to provide relief, reduce BG numbers as fast as i could.. Khan started over 600+ for his BG! poor guy was very miserable.Look up on main page "supply closet" to learn how others have purchased their insulin. I began on Humulin N then went to Lantus from Canada--you will see it there. I have MORE than enough Lantus for now.. if you are going on lantus- I wish I could sell you a pen and get it to you quickly. If there were a way I'd do it. So happy you found this site. Welcome! :)

If you havn't read yet.. look up "education" on main page and watch video on home monitoring to get ideas on ear testing.

I know for me it works to squat over my cat while he is on his belly and I'm massaging him to get him relaxed. You will get the hang of the way that works best for you and your cat.

Merrick's "Cowboy Cookout" is beef-based pate-style, and is about 6% carbs. They have a nice chicken choice also.

I've been giving Junga some "Cowboy Cookout"; my vet is very excited about that catfood. Unfortunately Junga isn't excited about that catfood. Junga doesn't like the chunks in the food and isn't too excited about it in general. So I've been 'frosting' it with duck catfood, which he loves. That gets him to eat enough that I can give him a shot. The vet says he needs to eat a "at least a teaspoon full" before a shot; I've been aiming for more like a tablespoonful.

I think Junga is allergic to chicken. Between his probable chicken allergy and his dislike of fish.... the choices really get narrowed.

I sure hope I can get the home testing down. I tried twice today -- actually getting a droplet at lunchtime, but by that time he was so distressed and fighting me so much I couldn't get it on the strip.
