Just found out my older cat, (15.5 yrs old), has diabetes. The numbers were not real high and the vet has prescribed HUMULIN N.
Humulin N is not a recommended insulin for diabetic cats; its just fine for dogs which have a slower metabolism. ProZinc, Levemir, Lantus, or BCP PZI are recommended for cats as each lasts about 12 hours in the cat, allowing you to shoot insulin twice a day while getting decent glucose control. Humulin N generally lasts about 6 to 8 hours in the cat.

... Has anyone tried homeopathic medication like VETiONX? NOT advertising for product just want to know. Here is the website: https://www.vetionx.com/dia-ionx_cat.ph ... 7AodKU0AOQ
I wouldn't waste your money. There is NO clinical research proving it is helpful.

Switching to a low carb canned or raw diet has been shown to lower glucose levels as much as 100 mg/dL using a human glucometer. And testing at home vs in a vet's office may show glucose levels 100 to 180 mg/dL lower.

If you're already giving insulin, you need to be home blood glucose testing before making any food changes, so you can monitor the impact. Switching to a low carb food can reduce the glucose 100 mg/dL and drop the insulin dose by as much as 2 units.

We recommend testing before each shot, so you can determine if it may be safe to give insulin. Testing at the nadir, the lowest glucose level after a shot, helps determine dose adjustments. You want this number to stay above 50 mg/dL on a human glucometer.

You need an inexpensive human glucometer, matching test strips, and 26 to 28 gauge lancets to test. Many of us use the WalMart ReliOn Confirm or Confirm Micro. If you avoid WalMart, use our SHOP link above and go to American Diabetes Wholesale. There, you can order the unbranded version of these meters as the Glucocard 01 or 01 Mini. All are made by Arkray and have interchangeable test strips.

We have some reference numbers for cats when using human glucometers. See my signature link Glucometer Notes for some details.

Hi there,in response to the vetionx....I bought a bottle when my cat was first diagnosed.I was trying diet change and homeopathic supplements the first month before starting insulin, actually about 6 weeks.Anyway this product did absolutely nothing to help ease his symptoms or help his numbers go down either. It looked just like water, tasted just like water and had no smell either.I strongly feel that it was a waste of money and a bunch of fooey! The very first week on Prozinc he was much better,I just wish I would not have detained his insulin therapy, due to empty promises like that product and others.!
