Any opinions on glargine? [sp?] Thanks.

Glargine is also called Lantus and it's a very good insulin.
Detemir is also called Levemir and it's a very good insulin.

Lantus is more acidic and some cats do better on Levemir as it's neutral.
I am sure you will do well on Lantus if that's what your vet wants you to use.

Wasn't suggested by my vet, but I have some petsitting clients who are on insulin, and that's what one of them is on and does really well on it. As for my own vet, I put 2 phone calls into them today, and haven't received a phone call back and I'm pretty sure they're closed now. Meanwhile, Joplin got 1 unit of Vetsulin this morning at 8am, tested at 325, tested at 238 at 12pm, and 250 just now at 5pm. Wondering if I should give him another dose. Would have been nice if my vet actually returned my phone call. :-x

That are not bad numbers for Vetsulin and he did not have the sudden onset that many cats have. If I were you and he continues to climb, i'd give him another one unit 12 hours after this morning's shot. It is possible that he will do okay with it. Who knows? As long as you are monitoring, I'd say continue for now and see how he does.

For reference: we generally think a cat is regulated if they are in the 250 range at preshot and double digits at midcycle, but not below 40 - which is hypo range.

Vet finally called me back (lucky for him, or he would've gotten an earful in the morning  ) Well actually, it was the vet tech. I spoke with. She said the reason he prescribed Vetsulin instead of PZI is that there's a huge cost difference, and since he's "borderline", he didn't want to make me make such a big investment if not needed just yet. Anyway, she said I could give him 1 unit in the morning and .5 at night, and see how that goes, and I also emailed her the info. on Vetsulin (thanks for posting that), and the vet is going to look at it tomorrow. Huge thanks to you guys for all your help. :-D

Cheryl, can we get you set up with a spreadsheet? It's a great color coded too that you and your vet can use, and if you need dose advice from us, we can see his history at a glance and get you the best info.

Here are the directions. It's a little tricky. If you need help, just ask.

BTW, any time your post flips to a second page, it's a good idea to start another thread. You can copy the url from this one and add it if you like.

I'm looking at the spreadsheet right now, and honestly I have no idea what any of it means. What's the +1, +2, etc. in each of the different columns? I know that BG means blood glucose, but that is the only thing I understand about this spreadsheet. I tried putting it in my signature, but I don't know if I did it right. But more importantly, I don't know how to use it.

Ok,

AMPS pre-shot blood glucose test done in the morning
PMPS pre-shot blood glucose test done in the evening
U = units of insulin given
+1 = 1 hour after your pre-shot test
+2 = 2 hours after your pre-shot test
+3 = 3 hours after your pre-shot test
etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.

Remarks/comments = a place to enter food given and when, test results from the vet, any other comments to help you and us see how your cat is doing.

ETA: Yes, you did the link to your signature correctly. I can see your spreadsheet just fine. Good job. ;-)

Great, thanks! Are you supposed to color code the readings based on the colored ranges of BG's in the upper row? I filled in his BG from tonight...hopefully I did it right. I don't test him every day 2x per day because he really gives me a hard time about it, and I feel bad what I'm doing to his ears :( But this will help me keep track, as long as I'm using it correctly!

The color coding is supposed to occur automatically due to a conditional format for the cells. I

If they aren't working properly, follow these iInstructions on How to Conditional Format a Cell in your spreadsheetand get them color-coded automatically.

The reason we strongly suggest you get those daily pre-shot numbers is to make sure the BG level is high enough to give the insulin dose. for new members starting out, we do not recommend that you inject insulin if the pre-shot number is below 200.

In that case, BG <200, we suggest that you wait to feed, wait to give the shot and post on here for advice.

p.s. Would you please add two more bits of information to your signature please? Type of insulin used and meter used for testing are very helpful.
