Re: New Here-Need Advice on Prozinc Dose

Okay, one last question before bed (so many questions)!!

Carl, i see that Bob is on PZI-is that the same as ProZinc?? If so, how long after administration does it "peak"?? Just trying to figure out when I should keep an extra close eye on mittens to see how he responds to the prozinc...

Re: New Here-Need Advice on Prozinc Dose

Good question:-)
No, the pzi Bob was on is not exactly the same as Prozinc. Bob's was a compounded form on insulin, and made from bovine insulin by a company called Veterinary Pharmacies of America (VPA) in Houston, TX.
Prozinc is a newer product, based on human insulin, but altered to more closely match feline insulin.
But for the most part they function the same way.

Bob's PZI had a duration of 8-10 hours with a peak around 5 hours after the shot.
Prozinc is supposed to last 10-14 hours, with a peak between 5-7 hours after the shot.

I gave Bob his shots roughly 12 hours apart, but sometimes it was an hour early or late due to my schedule which is really wonky. I sometimes work three or four different shifts a week, and have different days off every week. Fortunately, I live and work on an island that's only four miles long, so I was always within ten minutes of home and could stop by the house when I needed to most days.

Prozinc usually starts to work 2-3 hours after the shot, reaches peak effect around 6 hours, and then starts to wear off between 9-12 hours. But nothing is etched in stone. That is "typical" though.

Re: New Here-Need Advice on Prozinc Dose

Lyndsay, keep those questions coming!

Absolutely no need to feel discouraged. You had that very stressful "trial by fire" learning to home test and did a fantastic job keeping Kittens numbers up and preventing a hypo. Give yourself a big pat on the back and hope you have someone close to you to give you multiple hugs. Here are some virtual hugs to keep you going. {{{{{Hugs}}}}}

This can be so hard to deal with at first. Anytime you don't understand something, need clarification, can't do something suggested, need a different explanation, need an emotional boost, we hope you will turn to the FDMB. We're not just here with the how to's of dealing with the diabetes, but will provide emotional support, and cost saving ideas for you.

Please, you are part of our FDMB family now. Family looks out for family, OK?

Hope you are having a good Sunday!

Re: New Here-Need Advice on Prozinc Dose

Thanks Deb :-D :-D

Question: after Fridays episode I was hesitant to administer the 3u of prescribed insulin, so for this mornings dose I gave him .5u (BS was 315) @ 545AM. I retook his BS at 10 (+4.75 hours), and it's at 311.
For tonight's dose-should I increase to 1u?

And the blood sticks are def getting easier due to all of the wonderful advice received on this site! Yeah!!

Re: New Here-Need Advice on Prozinc Dose

See if you can test again around +6 or +7 and see if it comes down a bit? Based on the two tests so far, I think 1u will be ok tonite, but too soon to tell.

Re: New Here-Need Advice on Prozinc Dose

What Carl said. Let's see another test before we say what to do for this evening.

Re: New Here-Need Advice on Prozinc Dose

Okay-mittens BS this evening =291. His next shot is due now, considering his BG barely dropped this AM after his morning dose-should I increase this evenings dose tonight to 1u and monitor?

Also, poor guy has diarrhea-is it normal for him to have this from transitioning from a dry food to wet food diet??

PS-I bought him the chicken liver treats from petsmart and used them as positive reinforcement for his BS sticks-he absolutely loves them & I'm now able to get a good stick on the first try!!!

yes, any diet change can cause GI problems. If it continues, a little canned pumpkin or baby food squash can help. (not pumpkin pie filling---and if you go with the baby food squash, make sure there's no added sugar)

As for the dose, I'm not sure I'd go up yet because the number is going down from earlier today. It might be better to just stick with the .5 for tonight, and get a good nights sleep (hopefully)

You can go up to 1 in the morning if he's still above 200 and have the entire day to test if you need to

And YEAH on the testing!! So happy to hear he's doing so much better with it! Bribery definitely helps when it comes to "training" our cats....or is that "when it comes to our cats training us"?.....LOL

We really need to get you working on a spreadsheet next so everyone can easily see where you've been and how he's been reacting. If you have trouble and can't do it, we have some people who can help set it up for you, and then you'd just need to keep it updated. (Deb is one of those people who have offered to help....You might send her a private message if you need her to do that for you)

Thanks Chris!! I'll keep with the .5 for tonight & increase in the AM if his BG reading supports it. I did take a quick look at the spreadsheet-ill try starting it tonight!

I honestly can't thank you all enough for all your help & support!
