So, the insulin shot is based off the lowest point of the cycle and not the number before being fed? I didnt know that. So, do I have this right-
Hypothetical day
6:00 Test
6:00Feed
7:00 (1 hr later) Insulin
1:00 6 hrs later test(then does this number determine my pm shot?)
A little lost now on what to do after this^^
My vet says I need to do a curve to potentially get his insulin changed. Have you all had the same experience? Like I said earlier, I was looking to get Lantus mainly bc Ive seen quite a few kitty charts with wonderful results-low numbers and units given and kitties going OTJ. Ive also had someone share a link(for lantus) where I could buy for lower dollars. Other suggestions are welcome!
Thanks so much!
A curve is just testing every 1-2 hrs to see how the insulin works. Sadly, with vetsulin you'll usually get high numbers because it wears off so quickly. Usually vetsulin only lasts for about 8 hrs or so. It is better for you to do a curve at home because stress will raise the bg. Was your vet saying they wanted a curve on the vetsulin to prove you need a different insulin, or were they saying you needed to bring him in on the first day of them starting lantus for a curve? I only ask because my vet absolutely REFUSED to just switch insulins, I had to take Hidey in the first day they started him on prozinc todo a curve, which is BS if you ask me because they still started him too high.
The food, 2% is a good choice. Even with that being label numbers its still good.
As for the +6 number determining what to shoot for the PM shot, yes you take that into account for your PM shot BUT it depends on the insulin. With lantus its a depot insulin and takes a few days to build up in the system, insulin like prozinc you can adjust dosage a little easier.
Has your vet ruled out other possible causes for high bg? Teeth, infection, etc?
Oh and dont forget the diabetic friendly treats

Most here use freeze dried chicken
