Hey y'alls. I still havent been able to figure out the spreadsheet on a phone but he seems to be feeling better. Ketones negative for 3 days now and with the upped dose instead of ranging in the 400-500s he's been consistent low 300s and dipped into the 200s a couple times today. I know thats still higher than it should be so im going to ask the vet tomorrow if we should maybe up it .5units. Although he's way more alert, active and chipper he's still super hungry and drinking all the time. Will this subside when i can get him in a more normal range? He's now eating 3-4 cans fancy feast pate a day and some boiled chicken for a distraction for ear pricks as he really isnt fond of those. I did try the paw pad that they dont walk on but its so tough i couldnt get anything from it.

Welcome. I’m going to get you help getting a spreadsheet going as we need to see it to give dosing advice. We have people that can get you set up quickly.
@Chris & China (GA) @Bandit's Mom

His appetite will decrease once he’s regulated. For now feed him as much as he wants. Just don’t feed 2 hours before insulin as you don’t want the preshots to be influenced by food.

Hi and welcome! Won't take me more than a minute to set up a spreadsheet for you, so let me know if you need help with that. Its definitely easier to do on the computer than a phone. At least the initial set-up.

I unfortunately dont own a computer/laptop or tablet. I only have my iphone. When i opened the blank spreadsheet i couldnt get it to save so that i could make edits to it

Sorry it’s taken time to get back to you.

My goodness you both did have a time of it didn’t you. Well done getting him to this stage!
How is his weight going now. Has he managed to put on any of the weight?
How much are you feeding him now?
It looks like you are doing TR now so that means you can increase the dose after 3 days if needed.. he definitely needs some more insulin so I would increase to 3.25 U.

I’m going to ask @Bandit's Mom to have a look at the spreadsheet and fix up a few things if you don’t mind. I know you can’t do it on your iPhone. You have swapped from the freestyle libre, back to the Alphatrak to the libre over the last few days and that needs to be reflected in the SS so we can see it easily. Also you have swapped to TR so that can go into the SS as well.

Are you still checking daily for ketones? Noting it in the Ss is good thanks.

No worries! Yeah it was definitely shocking going from the vet saying he would bet money it was the tooth and then a week later going in for the dental apt and finding out dka with the before anesthesia bloodwork and then urinalysis. I wish we had done the blood at the first apt instead of waiting the week rill the dental but he was so confident that was the issue. And i mean technically it is part of it. From 12/2-12/8 he put on nearly a pound which was great to see. He eats 4 cans of fancy feast pate a day and a small piece of boiled chicken for a snack because he likes to beg at the table. I give him 1- 1 1/2 cans with both of his shots depending on how hungry he is and usually i split another can into two small meals during the day as he still has a couple lbs to put back on to be at his normal weight. Last weighed in at 10.8 and he should be about 13 just to fill out his hips a little more.
Ketones i try to check daily since he has a pretty good meal and litter box routine. My new vet said if i dont get it every day to not freak out unless hes giving me reason to believe he's not feeling right. With his last ketones he was still acting completely normal so she had said sometimes they can have small amounts without being acidotic and i should be more worried if they're present and he's lethargic not eating which hasnt been the case since his first diagnosis.
And okay i'll add that to my ss when i get a break at work. Once this libre is done i did buy a relion meter as the alphatrak was going to be costing me 50$ every 2weeks for the strips so i'll make sure to note that switch in my signature.
And im going to be switching him to the 3.25 this morning. His new vet said i was changing too fast so she wanted me to hold off but i've been told by a couple people here i should go ahead and up.

You are doing a really good job getting him over it all. It’s true ketones are more of a worry if there is lethargy and not wanting to eat as well, but if you do see any ketones at all, and he seems fine, you need to feed him more and maybe increase the dose of insulin if the data indicates it as it is the lack of food and the lack of insulin that will cause the ketones to appear and if an infection is also present, that is the recipe for DKA. So by testing you have your insurance policy. Anything above a trace of ketones needs vet attention.

Sounds as if he is eating well, which is really important post DKA. Once he gets into better numbers he should be able to regain the weight and muscle he lost.
A good idea to swap to a human meter as the alphatrak is too expensive to run.
I would increase the dose as per the TR protocol as you don’t want to keep him in high numbers. Hopefully when he has the dental it will help with the numbers. Pain can also increase the BGs.
If you would like to post each day we will help you. You might like to post now over on the Lantus page where most Lantus users post. We start a new post each day there. In the subject line you put the date, OJ name and the AMPS. You will get lots of support there.

Thank you! Im definitely impressed with the progress he's made and only being 8 he's got lots of years left in him so we're playing to win. He was born in my basement from a feral kitty so I've had him his entire life so i definitely feel a little more indebted to him and his well being. We can tell he's feeling better because he's back to being a little bit of a bully which is totally his personality. And he's been counter surfing and jumping in the fridge when we open it so he's got that appetite back. But thank you for the advice with extra feeding and insulin if he starts showing ketones again. When he was i was just bringing him for subq fluids and they were going away within a day with that. But i bought him some renal failure electrolyte drink for cats and i've been adding a few spoons of that to his food every day so idk if thats helping with the hydration at all or if its doing absolutely nothing and he's doing better with the hydration on his own

This is his last 24hrs with the libre in

I scanned him right before his shot. So shot time was like 11:05am. So didnt look like he was climbing up as much as he usually is before shot time today. He also ate 2 cans of fancy feast with his shot

Hmmm, well, if his shot times are 11 and 11, it looks like he's getting nice curves out of the insulin, it's just that the curves are in high numbers. That's matching what you get for the pokes, so it looks like the new libre is working.

Now let's see what he does with the higher dose! I agree with Bron that daily posting in the Lantus forum might be a good idea as you move on to trying to get these numbers down. Tons of experience there!

Thanks! Yeah his shot times are 11 and 11. Sometimes it might be 1030 with my work schedule but i try to keep it no different than the half hour. And okie. I'll start posting on there with his daily numbers
