Maverick became an angel in April and he was on .10 units of Lantus.

Just picked up Hefner from the cat shelter. He was becoming depressed in his cage after five months and hasn't been eating well. His shot time is normally 4pm and its 6:07 now. Ten minutes ago I fed him low carb food.

I would love a crash course on what to do tonight. They have been shooting 2.0 units blind. He's about 12lbs but I have to weigh him on our baby scale to make sure. At the shelter he was on vet food - kibble for diabetes (yah I know).

I have testing supplies, lantus and his insulin from the shelter as well as his kibble and a whole big bag of low carb wet food. I don't think I have a hypo kit anymore and will have to go get one set up tonight.

Please help. I posted on Lantus Land also. If anyone is up to calling me I have a North American call plan and can call you back. When Maverick was diagnosed I had a week of reading before our first shot (vet went on vacation before we got the results).

Thank you.

Karrie and Hefner.

That is the same as Humulin N. I had actually never heard of it called exactly that. Novolin yes, NPH yes, but not the GE part. But I looked it up and it is the same. You can start by reading the N primer on the ISG here particularly if you decide to continue with this insulin:

I think the dry food is probably the only thing that is stopping this poor cat from hypo'ing. Two units is rather a lot to shoot blind on any insulin, but this insulin particularly. No wonder he is depressed, probably feels bad. :( Good for you taking him under your wing.

Since you have Lantus, I would suggest switching him to that and going back to the Lantus ISG for help with the switch and title your post as such. I hope you are successful in getting him tested too.

My gosh. I just tested him twenty minutes after about an ouce and a half of wet low carb food. I had to replace the battery as the meter had gone dead - a 79!!!!! I wonder if this is why he wasn't eating. I have to find if I still have the control solution somewhere. I'll also test myself or one of the civvies here for a control test if I can't.

That is crazy if they were shooting 2 units blind.

You may have very well have a broken diabetic, or at the very least a stress induced diabetic...We will have our fingers, toes and paws all crossed that all he needed was out of a cage, and the right diet.

Good for you Karrie for saving this kitty. :) Yes, good idea to withhold insulin and take it from there tomorrow. Hopefully he will go into remission, or maybe with just a little help with a good insulin like Lantus. Hefner is in good hands. :)

Bless you for taking him in! I think this is going to be the start of a great relationship!
I'd hold off on the insulin and keep testing. Sending a special request to St. Francis to interceed for Hef! cat_pet_icon

Karrie, thank you for opening your heart and home to this sweet little man. Now you'll need a bunch of girl kitties too, you can't have a Hefner and not have a bunch of young hotties hanging around. I think maybe 4 week old kittens would be fitting for him, but they'd need to all be blond  Sorry, could not resist.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you need anything at all. I look forward to learning more about Hef and can't wait for pictures :)
