New food AGAIN, when should I test?

Hi guys,

As a refresher, since it's a different story than most, Twink was diagnosed with diabetes a year ago but it turns out it was caused by the steroids the vet was giving her for her constant vomiting (likely IBD). We put her on Hills M/D, took her off the meds and her BG slowly went down to normal (no insulin) and thankfully her vomiting stopped. I only spot check her numbers now (they get pretty low when she hasn't eaten in awhile). She went in for her annual checkup and everything was great except her lipids and triglycerides were a bit high. So now the vet wants to switch her onto Hills W/D because it's low fat. W/D says it's a diabetic food but its got 37% cals from carbs! So I want to be really careful and make sure her numbers don't go too high again. How often should I test and when? I don't think I need to test everyday since her numbers have been normal for a year. We're doing a super slow transition, 1/4 new food for 2 weeks, 1/2-1/2 for 2 weeks, etc. I'm even thinking maybe I should just leave it at half and half, it'd be lower fat than she's at now and way less than 37%. Too bad Twink can't stand wet food or I'd try the natural food diet. And this is all assuming my baby doesn't start tossing up her dinner on the carpet all the time... :YMSIGH: What would you guys suggest? Thanks to everyone and hi to all your sugar cats!

I'm not clear. Do you feed all dry now? Which brand? I think all of us would stay away from dry if possible. And if impossible, then Evo has the fewest carbs. Even if it was steroid induced diabetes before, I wouldn't run the risk of her getting diabetes from high carb food.

The suggestions I have are to check out Dr. Lisa's website: www.catinfo.org. And to change your subject to her specific diagnosis so others in the same boat will reply.

i agree with Sue - even a cat whose diabetes was caused by steroids still needs to stay on a low carb diet for life, as far as i understand.

really the question that would be most helpful for you to have answered is that you need ideas for a low carb, low fat food. i'd ask that in your subject line and see what people will suggest. i know there are different food lists for special diets like that, but i don't have the links.
