Hi- just got a dx and set up with insulin. First dose tonite- most nervous about hypoglycemia and the fact that my cat has never eaten more than 2 oz of food a day- EVER. How did she get to be 17 pounds and diabetic??

Welcome.
What insulin? Good insulins are the human Lantus and Levemir and the pet insulins ProZinc and BCP PZI. For those two human insulin it is best to get the 5 pack of 3 ml disposable pens via a 10 ml vial. Although per ml the vial is less expensive most cats will not use up a 10 ml vial before the insulin goes bad/becomes ineffective. The human insulin N/NPH is sometimes prescribed but only lasts 8-10 hours. Same for the pet insulin Vetsulin/Caninisulin.
What dose of insulin?
Most of us here test our cat's blood glucose at home using a human meter. We test before each shot and periodically between shots. We record our reading and other info in a spreadsheet. See:

What are you feeding? A low-carb canned is best. No reason for a prescription food. Here is a list of commercial low-carb canned

I have Lantus- 1 unit 2x day. It was really pricey- my vet said I can use it for 6 months.
I got a list of canned food- she already ate 9 Lives, so we're good there.
Since we just started, I take her to the vet in a week so they can do a curve- have no idea about home testing!
She's been pretty sick and lethargic this week- hope it gets better soon, but not too low!

Your vet is correct - refrigerated and stored on a stationary shelf, you can use Lantus up to 6 months.

You need to get an inexpensive human glucometer such as the Walmart ReliOn Confirm or the Confirm Micro (also sold as the Arkray USA Glucocard 01 and 01 Mini from www.adwdiabetes.com), matching test strips, and lancets labelled for alternate site testing (these are 26-28 gauge and more likely to get a blood drop). Please avoid meters with Tru or True in the name; we have not had good results with those. Let us know when you have them and we'll help you get started with home blood testing. Also pick up some urine ketone test strips - ask the pharmacist to find them or go online to purchase (ex KetoDiaStix which tests urine glucose too, or KetoStix which only tests for ketones).

Until you get those supplies, please take a look at my signature link Secondary Monitoring Tools for some other assessments to help you evaluate your cat.
