I have a male 2 year old Russian blue diagnosed today with diabetic and anemia. the vet told us he diabetic has 2 months to live at most. My family and i are armed with Iv bag, shots, special food and medicine my family and i are not going down without a fight. is it unusual to have these two illness together. Any information is urgently needed. Thank you. i am arming myself since 12 noon with as much knowledge as the internet has to offer. first hand information is needed

What did he say was the anemia cause?
Some places can do transfusions if the problem is temporary.
If the anemia is due to a Bartonella infection, it may be helped by certain antibiotics.
If the anemia is due to cancer, that may be why he said 2 months.

Diabetes, on the other hand, is very treatable if you are willing to put in the time.
- what insulin and dose were you told? Good insulins are ProZinc, Lantus, Levemir, and BCP PZI. Other insulins may require dosing every 8 hours to get good control.
- home blood glucose testing - to measure how well the insulin is working and to determine if dose adjustments are needed.
- what were you told to feed? Low carb, canned, over the counter food may drop the glucose 100 mg/dL if you were feeding high carb before.

Was the vet able to tell why the cat is anemic? If there's no internal bleeding and no sign of cancer causing the anemia and it's just due to nutritional deficiencies, then this can usually be corrected with proper diet.

Can you please provide us with a little bit more information?
1. What "special" food were you given? The majority of "prescription" foods are crap. Check out catinfo.org for more information on feline nutrition and what is considered an appropriate diet for obligate carnivores.
2. What insulin were you prescribed and what starting dose?
3. What were the blood glucose numbers at the vet and are you open to home-testing your cat just as human diabetics test themselves?
4. Any other complications like ketones, UTI, dental infections, diabetic ketoacidosis? Two years old is quite a young age to be having these issues without something else possibly going on.

ETA: cross-post with BJ, so sorry for the redundancy.

I actually was unable to go to the vet. my husband took him. . I was given during the wrong information he was having kidney problems and anemiaDo u have a forum for this??. I have to call tomorrow i apologize. but he said he was born with this

Ask your vet for a copy of the blood work results (they're yours, you paid for them). What was his HCT (hematocrit)? If it's between 20-30%, B complex and injectible B12 is highly recommended, but if it's lower than that, ESAs (stimulates bone marrow to produce red blood cells) are in order. A blood transfusion can also buy you time while the ESAs are doing their thing. Did you say that your cat has kidney problems? As BJM mentioned, please visit this site for more information: http://www.felinecrf.org/anaemia.htm and be sure to join the support group. Anemia is very serious, so you will need to be aggressive with the treatment. I'll see you over at the CKD support group!

This
HCT* *19.9 %
is bad. Normal is 29 to maybe 50%
A
%retics *0.3
means that the anemia is not regenerative that is the body is NOT trying to make up for the low HCT. Normal is <1.
This
CREA= 11.6 mg/dL H
and
BUN/UREA > 130 mg/dL H
indicate kidney problems.
Also when the kidneys go bad they do not release enough of the hormone the make the bone marrow make red blood cells so a cat becomes anemic. An HCT less the 20% indicates severe kidney problems

I sent you a reply to your message, but here is another page you should read: http://www.felinecrf.org/just_diagnosed.htm#how_sick Just because those numbers look really bad doesn't mean this is the end for your little guy. This can be turned around, but you need to act quickly. Please join the kidney support group ASAP and post all of these results as well as the reference ranges. They will help you understand what they mean and what to do about them. Most importantly, talk to your vet and see if they have access to ESAs. If not, you need to locate them and get them started ASAP. That is something you will have to give for life. Here's the page for ESAs and where to get them: http://www.felinecrf.org/esas.htm I've posted your results to some friends of mine from the CKD group, and I will message you when I hear back from them. In the meantime, please join the group.
