hello everyone,

My 10 year old beloved male cat was diagnosed 11/3/16 and prescribed 2 units glargine insulin twice a day along with a diet of Purina DM wet and dry. I feel awful for letting him get so heavy (18.1 lbs), and I'm overwhelmed by all the new information I need to sift through. His blood sugar level was 460 when he was diagnosed, and I'll be taking him back in in about ten days for a full day of monitoring.

Today I'm trying to figure out:
How to feed my healthy svelte female...Not sure if she should be getting the Purina DM or not.
What path to follow for my diabetic cat...should I follow vets advice or take notes online and discuss alternatives with her.

Thank you for being here!

Welcome.
- Lantus is a good insulin. Two units twice a day is a little high to start with. Most start with one unit twice daily.
- It is good that yo are home testing. We test before each shot and periodically between shots. We record our reading and other info in a spreadsheet. See:

- No reason for a prescription food. Here is a list of commercial low-carb canned

Welcome! I am new too. :)

My vet also recommended Purina DM, but shared a list of OTC foods similar to the list Larry shared above. For the convenience of feeding two cats, I'm feeding mostly fancy feast classicis, from that list.

There is lots of good info here on this website/board!

What a nice group! I feel better already knowing I have a place to turn. Thank you for the feedback. I really appreciate it and will fold it into dear boy's care.

I'm a NEWB as well, like 48 hours new and I must say this group is Awesome!! They have helped me big time. I'm already feeling more confident in how to tackle my little guy's diabetes. It's a huge learning curve, but one that can be eased into with a little help and you found the perfect place in my opinion.
