My cat was just diagnosed yesterday, he is 7 years old, weighs 17 pounds, his blood glucose was 500. He has been prescribed 4 (units or whatever the measurement is called) of insulin twice a day. My vet did not carry the insulin so I had to buy it at the pharmacy and it was $190. Any suggestions on getting it less expensive? Also, my vet gave me dry DM...he offered me wet also, but my cat eats dry. After reading here, it looks like I need to switch him right away to canned. Do you think it is better for the cats chances of recovery to splurge on the wet DM, or is the fancy feast really just as good? I am really worried, it seems to have come on so strong and so fast. The cat just had blood tests 8 months ago before dental surgery and was fine. Also, the vet has not been able to test his urine yet. My cat is a very "chicken" indoor cat, and he keeps peeing in the carrier before the vet can get a sample.

CAUTION - FOR SAFETY, BEFORE CHANGING FOOD YOU MUST BE HOME TESTING THE BLOOD GLUCOSE Glucose levels may drop 100 mg/dL (5.5 mmol/L) and thus the insulin dose lowers too..

And low carb canned food may reduce your insulin cost considerably. Spitzer went from 3 units to 1 unit. Dusty (Jo's cat) on Fancy Feast pates, is now on a trial of no insulin and is halfway through the 2 weeks to confirm he doesn't need it.
