Hi, I'm really curious as to whether or not anyone else out there has experienced the same (or a similar) situation as I have. My cat (male short haired, around 9 years old, by the way I am in Canada) was vaccinated about a month and a half ago, rabies and I believe distemper, and had a bad reaction to the vaccine a few hours later (vomiting and shivering). We took him back in the next day and he was given some antihistamines (I don't know the exact type). He seemed to be a-ok but we had a trip planned for less than a week after this and were gone for two weeks. The friend that was taking care of him while we were gone continuously told us that he seemed just fine but when we got back he was clearly NOT ok and could barely walk.

We took him into a different vet and found out that he had lost about 10% of his body weight and the vet was very confident that the issue was immune-mediated arthritis (I hope that's correct terminology). He was put on Prednisolone (5mg twice a day) and was given some painkillers to get him through the first few days. Soon after this he started having diarrhea which we believe was caused by the Prednisolone so we started him on Metronidazole to calm down his guts.

On our last trip in (yesterday) we were a bit concerned about possible kidney issues due to some things we had read online and asked for his urine to be checked for protein, as I'm sure you can guess by this point, no protein in his urine but they did find sugar. They checked his BG levels on the spot and I believe the level was 19.6 (about 350).

The vet has put him onto Lantus and he just had his third shot (1 unit each time). He slept for a huge amount of time today after his morning shot but seems to be perkier than he has been in a long time this evening leading up to and following the evening shot. His Prednisilone doses have been cut in half today and we are bringing him off them ASAP but our big concern is that they haven't finished doing their job with the arthritis...

Sorry for the ridiculously long story but it is what it is. I was just hoping to see if anyone has any experience even close to this with the steroid induced diabetes (sorry!, forgot to mention that he was NOT diabetic four weeks ago). I have been trying to do as much reading as I can but as you all know it can get a bit overwhelming trying to figure it all out in the first couple of days. Thanks for listening!

While all 3 of my diabetics were adopted by my husband and I as diabetics so I don't have enough history on any of them to determine what made them diabetic. But I do have both good and bad news for you about steroids & Cats...Bad news...Yep, they sure can cause diabetes in felines....Good News...Those are the cats that once the steroids are removed and their diets changed to Low Carb/High Protein canned or Raw quickly go into remission and off insulin. :-D

Some of the best things you can do to help your little guy out is, if he isn't already, switch him over to a low carb/high protein diet, and chuck any dry food if you are feeding any out. This is actually a much better diet for him regardless if he is diabetic or not so it is just fine to feed any other purry member of your household if you have them...I, personally, have 14 and everyone here eats exactly the same diet. And one of my diabetics has been in remission for almost 2 years now.

And since you are tapering off the pred, I would highly encourage you to learn to test at home sooner rather than later, as once the pred clears his system he made need much less or no insulin at all fairly quickly. My Maxwell, while I have no history to support it, I believe was either a stress induced or steroid induced diabetic, and with him I changed his diet to the low carb canned and after getting insulin for about 10 days he was in remission and off insulin altogether. Being able to test him at home allowed me to catch the changes in his insulin needs quickly and reduce and stop it before having to face a hypo event.

I'm sure others will be along shortly with some key links for you to read through, but wanted to stop by and at least welcome you to the FDMB family and give you a quick answer to your question.

Thanks for the reply! I have already switched him over to some low carb food and have bought quite a selection to see what he likes to eat. The most difficult part about it is that he usually eats wet food really fast when he gets it, so this morning he ate about half a days worth of food in 10 minutes and isn't going to eat much for the rest of the day. Right now I'm just hoping that he'll get used to it.

I am working closely with our vet to find the best way forward and haven't started testing quite yet. The little guy is going in to do a full day curve on Wednesday and I will be getting a meter at the same time so I can do my own monitoring.
