Hello ! Name is Chelsea, my fur baby (Lisa) who is 9 yrs old has been diagnosed with diabetes :,)

I’ve reached out to another diabetic cat community that helps rehoming / assistance for help but have not received anything yet and want to figure this out asap for Lisa.

long story short - about a month ago she started urinating outside her litter box. I thought it was behavioral and did all I could -then narrowed it down to medical. $450 later I have a cat with diabetes( apparently for about 3 weeks now)

he suspected a uti as well and gave me antibiotics, had stated besides this she’s a perfectly healthy cat. She has been pretty consistent with her litter box again on the plus side.

I am not able to care for her. Financially, or to be consistent with what she needs to be and stay healthy :,( and with each day passing I just get more worried for her.

I don’t want to throw her in a shelter, or foster family to be moved again and again. She’s literally the calmest, nicest, loving cat you’d ever run across. And recently caught 2 mice from my house ( I live by a golf course ) Has been around dogs, kids, other cats, a skunk, and other animals. She just wants to sleep and cuddle. She just wants all the petting you’d give her haha
Even when she’s upset she doesn’t claw at you or anything.

What can I do ???? It’s been 3 days since the vet… and I can’t afford to go to do another checked up or get her insulin.. even if I was able to - im not able to follow up with the care a diabetic cat needs, a lot of the time I’m not home for over 12 hours.
Family and friends aren’t an option.. and I don’t know anyone who would possibly be willing to welcome her into their home.

whats the best thing for her ??
She’s so so so sweet she deserves a HOME. Honestly im thinking of putting her down to save her from the stress and abandonment that a shelter would bring on.. but it’s just so unfair and heartbreaking and just feels so wrong as she seems fine.. which is why I am reaching out everywhere <3

location : near Indianapolis, IN / Cincinnati/ OH

any input is welcomed. apologizes if this isn’t what this forum is for.

I would say where you're located. It's possible someone here would be willing to adopt her. I understand that a diabetic cat takes a lot of care, but please continue to reach out! There are people knowledgeable and willing to care for Lisa. She's a relatively young cat and sounds wonderful.

she is so wonderful and loving. I am reaching out everywhere I can think of. I updated my post with the location but I am around Indianapolis, IN / Cincinnati, OH

I do understand you can’t keep your kitty but I am concerned you have not started any insulin.
Once cats are diagnosed as diabetic, they need insulin otherwise they can develop ketones which can be dangerous if they progress further.
Have you swapped her to a low carb canned diet such as fancy feast pates?if not please do that as that will help.

I am going to tag @Chris & China (GA) as she may have some suggestions.

That’s why I’m so stressed :,) I had to have my sister help me with the vet bill and antibiotics and she can’t help me with anything else so I haven’t been able to get the insulin…but what happens if I start injections and can’t do it every 12 hours ? I don’t have anything to test where her levels are or able to bring her in so that they can check, or knowledgeable what so ever about diabetes. I’m like not getting solid sleep thinking about her downstairs hoping nothing happens while I’m asleep or gone
The last thing I want is for her to go into a status where she’s in pain and no one is home to know/ help her for hours :(
I just want to do the best thing for her regardless of my feelings. haven’t been able to get the food they’re suppose to have until today because of my work schedule

There is no "food they are supposed to get" from the vet. All you need for a diabetic food is a low carb food, under 10% carbs, preferably wet food. Many people here feed Fancy Feast or Friskies pate foods, which are very economical and available in your supermarket.

You do the best you can. If you have to skip an injection, shoot again when you can.

I'm hoping Chris has some ideas, but some of our suggestions for cheap sources of insulin and syringes, test kits depend on where you live. Can you give us a rough idea? Country to start. We also have some people in our Supply Closet forum giving away diabetic supplies.

In the US, Lantus and Prozinc are the two recommended insulins for cats. Recent changes in insulin pricing have really brought down the price. This post tells you how you can get a box of pens for $35, that amount will last you months, possibly a year.
A lot of people buy blood glucose monitors from Walmart. Their Relion products are very well priced and have a small blood drop.

This next post has some other idea to help out financially:
