Is this as overwhelming as it appears. My cat Joey was just diagnosed with diabetis. So much is being thrown at me at once. Is it really this difficult? Help!

First - BREATHE!!!!

Second - it is very manageable! Panic can be over now...it's just a 'different' dance...

More people will be along also....

Welcome! You are in the right place. There are experienced people here (I'm not one yet!) who generously share their knowledge and time. You will never be alone in dealing with this. There is always someone online to answer questions, give guidance or just hold your hand during a panic moment. Is Joey on insulin, if so what kind?

Thank you Linda....I pick him up tomorrow. The doctor says everything he needs will be with him. She will first instruct me on injections. I won't know anything until tomorrow.

Can you call the office and ask what kind of insulin he'll be getting tomorrow? That way you can focus on THAT insulin as you're wading thru things. We'll get you 'armed' beforehand!

Right now, don't panic. If I can do this, anyone can do this! 4 months ago, I literally fainted at the SIGHT of a needle - now I give injections twice a day!

Welcome to you and Joey! And yes, breathe. It is overwhelming at first - will it help to know we were all overwhelmed and scared? But knowledge is power and the more you know and understand, the more comfortable and confident you will feel about Joey's treatment.

We have a very successful protocol we use. We start with a mild, long lasting insulin like ProZinc, Lantus or Levemir. We test our cat's ears before every shot so we know it is safe to give insulin. And we feed them wet lo carb food.

So here is some information for you to digest:

Wet lo carb food. Why it is best: www.catinfo.org Feeding between 8-10% carbs using the food chart: http://binkyspage.tripod.com/canfood.html

Testing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zE12-4fVn8

We hope you will do a lot of reading and ask questions. We would love to help you help your Joey.

Welcome to you and Joey both...

Yep first Breathe!

Second this is so easy once you learn the steps to this dance that I adopted 2 cats Because they were diabetic! Now that might not mean alot until I tell you that I also have 11 non-diabetics, 9 of which I had before I adopted my 2 diabetics. Oh yeah, and a 93.5lb dog...If it was extremely doable I certainly wouldn't have taken on my two extra-sweet fur kids. :-D

Third, you have found US, and we will be here to answer every question for no question is too silly to ask, and we will hold your hand and Joey's paw through it all..

WELCOME TO THE FDMB FAMILY.....You are now officially adopted by a world-wide family of Proud Owners of Sugarcats.

Yes, it can be very overwhelming, but I tell you, you came to the right place. My Simba was diagnosed in April of this yr. And boy, was I a mess. I took him for a 2nd opinion since I was not happy with my previous vet. The 2nd opinion vet was very against dry food. After he saw the 2nd opionion vet in June I finally made the dicision NO DRY FOOD. Simba's last dosage of insulin was June 29th. He has been so stable with his levels and I have to thank this site for all the information I was giving.

Feline diabetes can be controlled, but I understand at first you are scared **** like I was and so overwhelmed with so much information thrown at you, but you do what you can and what is best for Joey.

When I came out of the 2nd opinion, the vet said Simba had some infections in his mouth that he needed 9 teeth pulled out. I totally freaked. Yes, my baby had 9 teeth pulled on 7/6/11. Yes, it was difficult going through that, but I swear the infection he had in his mouth, I believe is was what caused his B/S to go up and him being diabetic for that short time. I admit Simba does eat a little of dry food now (Core Dry) and his B/S are fine. And yes, he eats the dry fine with most of his teeth gone. I do recommend you to have Joey's mouth/teeth checked out thoroughly. Most cat owners don't even know that their kitties have teeth/gum infections. My previous vet diagnosed him in April w/diabetes and said he just needed a basic cleaning when ever, but when I came out of the 2nd opinion vet it was a totally different story.

Good luck with Joey.....
