Hi. My cat was just diagnosed with diabetes. Help!!! My vet said he should have a food that keeps him regulated. Regulate what? Does anyone have any suggestions with where to start on what food to get him? thanks much. ABC
Please start a new post, as you've posted within an existing thread. Introduce yourself, tell us about your cat and how it was diagnosed, what insulin you are using, etc.
Re your question...please read the faq that is linked in this thread. REgulation means stabilizing your cat's blood glucose levels, and just as with human diabetics, food plays a role.
Regulate the blood sugar levels. Diabetes is uncontrolled high blood sugars. By feeding a high protein low carb food you can sometimes will allow the cat's body to control/regulate the blood sugar levels so that you do not need to give insulin.
Does anyone have any suggestions with where to start on what food to get him?
There are a lot of options out there. A lot of us feed low carb versions of fancy feast or no grain versions of wellness. Some of us went the extra step and went to a raw diet. To read more about diet check out Janet and Binky's charts by starting here http://www.felinediabetes.com/diabetic-cat-diets.htm
or Dr. Lisa's site here http://www.catinfo.org
It is always a cram session when you first get started. I learned the most from reading up on articles from vet: Lisa Pierson http://www.catinfo.org/felinediabetes.htm This is one of the great articles she has about diet.
