Meeks was diagnosed last week. We started insulin (Lantus) on Tuesday but she decided not to eat much on Thursday (she was probably already too low for the shot in retrospect....obviously I am a newbie, and it was okay the day before!), and was down to 3.6mmol/L after 10 hours. So we went back to the vet to make sure my meter was reading properly (it is), and she sent me home with instructions to skip the PM dose, offer her a "smorgasbord" of food that night, and only shoot in the morning (with a lower dose) if she eats at shot time.
Of course she did not. She ate some overnight, and a bit during the day on Friday, so no shots. Same last night and today, but she has eaten even less. I picked up some Ketostix this afternoon and that looked fine (phew!), but I don't understand why she isn't eating!
She is by far the pickiest cat I have encountered. There are approximately 3 things she typically finds acceptable: her kibble, Natural Balance platefuls pouches, and freeze dried salmon. So far today, she has had several salmon treats (whatever I offer, but they are in limited supply) and a handful of kibble. Today, it seems like she'll get a kibble in her mouth (only with some encouragement and reassurance), bite it, and then it falls back out again and she gives up and walks away.
I can't figure out what is wrong, other than I think the stress of the Thursday vet visit was significant (she won't go into my bedroom, where the cat carrier was sitting on the floor for the last week, even now that it is back in the closet, and keeps giving the room the side-eye when she walks by), especially since it was the 3rd trip in a week! She has never been super food-driven, so I'm unsure how to motivate her, other than providing only dried salmon...Even then I'm worried the appeal will wear off!
But she can't have any pudding (aka insulin) if she doesn't eat her meat. I don't know what to do! She has been sleeping all day (pretty normal!), other than pee/water breaks and a few nibbles when prompted....
