New Diabetic

KEDWARDS

New Member
Newly diagnosed diabetic 7 yr old short hair female.
Ended up in Emergency Clinic for 6 days with acute Pancreatitis. Now home and struggling to feed her the recommended Purina Pro Plan DM. Are trying to mix with whiskas perfect portions which she will eat although we know it is high in carbs. She is still on a lot of meds (appetite stimulant anti nauseant and 2 antibiotics for another 5 days). We have stopped her gabapentin (for pain) because she was literally too drowsy to eat. Any suggestions to get her to eat the DM would be appreciated.

Hello and welcome. What is kitty's name?

You don't need to feed her the DM. It's called dietetic management, not diabetic management. It's low carb but nothing special for diabetic cats. The ingredients aren't great either. Any many cats tire of it or just don't like it. You can feed any commercial (or home made) food, ideally wet food or raw, that is 10% or less in carbs. What food was she eating before her diagnosis? This food list has some of the foods available. The list is a little old now, but still has data for a lot of foods in North America. What country are you in? Suggestions may vary by country.

What was the gabapentin dose? Maybe it was too high?

Some information here may be of help: A Primer on Pancreatitis. I hate pancreatitis!

Is she on insulin yet? That answer and more would be good in your signature so we don't keep asking. Another post for you: New? How You Can Help Us Help You!
