New Diabetic Kitty Momma

Just diagnosed last week. she's been SO good about shots, is getting B-12 2x daily to reverse the neuropathy, letting me test her (though i did a pretty bad job of getting blood last night and she was pretty unwilling today :(

Is it just me or is it nearly impossible to get a guide to what "normal" numbers are?

My vet said not to go below 100 but i just read on another post that 40 - 60 is good? I freaked out last night when she was 86. Just now she was 106.

she was between 120 and 180 the first few days and seem maybe to be dropping now.

I'm sure someone here has a great post already on what numbers i want her to have but i haven't found it.

help?

thanks!

Numbers below 120 are considered normal blood glucose. As far as how low, we do not like to have our cats sitting below 50 for any length of time if they are getting insulin. Below 50 increases the risk for hypoglycemia. Make sure you have some high carb food (for example, varieties of Fancy Feast that have gravy -- grilled, marinated, roasted or Gravy Lovers) or Karo (or other) syrup in the house if you need to bump numbers up.

There are several insulin specific support groups here. If you check in with the group based on which insulin you're using, you may be able to get more information specific to your needs.

Oh Hi! I'm MJ and my kitty is Gobnait.

She is a medium haired black tip with white undercoated rescue kitty. She's about 9 and a half and I've had her since she was a kitten.

See video of her first day home meeting my other (then) kitten Desmond in 2001. They're still together and yes he still grabs her head and licks her like in this video. http://www.youtube.com/user/MJTisor#p/u/10/kv3JN4Xmjpo

She's on insulin. vet started her at 3 units and had me move her down to 2.5 units. I've been giving her 2.5 2x daily. reading other posts now this also seems high.

she has neuropathy which is what called my attention to the diabetes in the first place. It varies iun severity and today I'm seeing it in the front legs too :(

last night when she hit 86 I was having a party at my house for a friend's birthday. in my panic, i gave her some licks of cake frosting and was thrilled an hour later when she was at 120.

so. I should NOT be concerned that she just tested at 106? and when can I try weaning her off of insulin? I have her just eating protein, no dry food, though she doesn't like the food the vet gave us. After I tested her just now and thought that 106 was low,m I gave her some shrimp because she snubbed the cat food. she did NOT snub the shrimp.

She is on Lantus. and Sue she looks like your Oliver but i can't seem to make my image small enough to create a profile picture :(

That helps! We have a Lantus support group that you will give you great info about dosing and how to deal with the numbers and the insulin. viewforum.php?f=9. Everyone there uses your insulin and will be able to help. Be sure to read the starred threads at the top of the page.

My Niko is a Russian Blue with a lovely personality. For your picture, check out the Tech Support page. There is a thread that explains how to put on a picture.

Thanks Sue. I'll go to the Lantus forum. It says that the image can't be larger than 9KB which is TINY and I don't have any editing software on this PC
