We were diagnosed 11 days ago. My vet phoned me on a Saturday afternoon and said to come in on Monday. We were scared to death. The nurse wasn't very knowledgable or helpful and sold us a bag of dry food along with our insulin. Puffs numbers just kept rising. It was 25 at vets and went up to 30 at home. I found this site and switched to wet food and almost immedietly it started dropping. Tonight pmps was 12.6 This site has helped me convince my hubby that we need to fire our vet, something I have been trying to get him to see for 6 years. So a big thank you all.

Wow! What a difference 11 days has made in your life and your cats life. Welcome to the best place you never wanted to be.

First off, from your user name it looks like your name may be Wendy, but you know what that say about making an assumption.   Would you please tell us your name and your already said your cats name was Puff? You can put that type of information in the user control panel, profile, edit signature free form text box. Info to put in there would be your name, cats name, date of diagnosis (DX date), insulin used, food you are feeding, any additional health issues your cat has. Things like that help to give us a quick snapshot of your cat and help us to help you better.

How is the home testing going? Do you need some tips?

Have you seen the cat food chart we refer to on Dr Lisa Pierson's site, cat info.org? We can send you the path to get there yourself or a direct link, your choice.

That 12.6 (227) is a much better number than you were getting before. That number is below the renal threshold which means there is not enough glucose in the cats body to be excreted by the kidneys and dumped into the urine. You want to see numbers below 13.3(240) if you can.

You have seen first hand what switching to a low carb wet food can do for your cat's diabetes. You still have some ways to go before your cat is regulated.

Please, let us know what you need help with most.

Yes my name is Wendy. I have been a little overwhelmed with the getting informed and testing. Trying to teach hubby and daughter also, that way there is always someone who can do it if I am late getting home from work. Hubby is softhearted and feels really bad doing it lol. This site has been a great help and I plan on posting it all on the weekend. Talked to the nurse at the vets office today to report Puffs glucose curve and the vet was suppose to get back to me but never did. Another reason to my list to find new vet. On the plus side I have convinced my sisters the benefits of feeding wet food. They don't want to do what I do everyday. Puff is on 2u of caninsulin 2x per day.

Hello there

1. what kind of food are you feeding? Fancy feast pates and friskies pates are low carb and reasonably priced
2. what meter are you using? Some are more accurate than others. I can also help advise on getting a free meter and where to get lower cost strips if u like.
3. A new vet would be good - ie Lantus is a better insulin for cats and you can get it without a prescription at any pharmacy including costco

Do you want to set up a spreadsheet to give us a better idea of how he is doing? Here is how to but if you have issues I can ask another member to help: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=18207

Hello Wendy

1. we are using special kitty pate from walmart. Hubby works there so we get a discount too. Puff likes it but she has never been a fussy cat lol. We can buy the lantis there too.

2. The glucose monitor is a Bayer contour next ez and if I can find the test strips cheaper that would be great. thank you.

3. I want to switch to Lantis as I have read good things here and not so good things about caninsulin.

4. Thank you for the link to the spread sheet. Had looked for it and couldn't seem to find it.

Puffs amps was 21(378) and pmps was 22(396) didn't have chance to check during the day and haven't been able to reach vet to find out what to do next. I feed her a 3 oz can at 5am then half can at 11am and full can at 5pm and another half can at 11pm. If anyone has any suggestions or if I am doing it wrong please let me know. Still a lot to learn and want my baby to feel better ( she is 14 so not such a baby)

Spreading out the food like you are doing is a very good idea. Think of them as a full meal in the morning, then a mini-meal, a full meal in the evening and then another mini-meal.

Would you please put some information in your user control panel for us? The user control panel is in the upper left corner at the top of your screen, below the image of the cat. If you click on user control panel, profile, edit signature, a free form text box pops up. Info to put in there would be your name, cats name, date of diagnosis (DX date), insulin used, food you are feeding, any additional health issues your cat has. After making the changes, click on the submit box below the message and click on yes on the next page if it asks you to verify this change.

Things like that help to give us a quick snapshot of your cat and help us to help you better.

Yes, you have this information in your post but I have to search through several posts to find each piece. It's a little 'buried'. Having all this in one place, and having it appear automatically in your signature would be a great help. I realize it is a lot to ask since you are dealing with this new sugardance, but it will help us to help you better and quicker.

I would switch to lantus if you can. Plus get some mid cycle tests in where you can like one midday and another just before bed.
Lastly I use eBay to buy bayer contour strips, I use shorefront medical a lot a d they are reliable and I can get 100strips and a box of free lancets for $50-$60 including shipping.. Sometimes I can get them cheaper if I try auctions.
