New and trying to get advice

I think I included Chester’s spreadsheet but I’m not certain if I did it right or if I am posting in the right place. My other cat Perty is also diabetic. They both get Levemir insulin. For your first post, you did fine! We can see both spreadsheets but it will be really helpful if you'll fill out your "Signature" too while you're here. If you look below our comments, you'll see some basic information about our cats that shows up every time we post. It's really handy to have it filled out so people don't have to keep asking the same questions over and over.

To do your signature, click on your sign on name (top right of the page) and there's a drop down menu that includes "Signature". A new box will pop up for you to enter information like:

Your name/Cat's name,age,sex,date Dx, type of insulin, type of meter, type of food, any other health problems or meds? And then put the link to your spreadsheet in.

With 2 cats, you'll have to do it twice but I'm not sure if it will let you have that many characters (we're only allowed so many in our signatures)
 
On Chester....are you asking if you should give him insulin this morning? As long as you're going to be home and able to test and have plenty of supplies (test strips, high carb food, Karo/honey/syrup) I'd go ahead and give the 1.75. He's getting some much nicer numbers lately!

On Perty, I'm glad you went up to 1U but can you start to get some mid-cycle tests on the AM cycle and at least 1 "before bed" test on the PM cycle? We need to know how low the dose is taking Perty so need to get more tests in if you can.

What you need to do is, create your signature, then add your links to your signature. Here are the instructions:

  • under Settings, Click on Signature. This is where you will put information that helps us give you feedback.
    • There is a limit of two lines which may include two links; you may separate pieces with commas, dashes, | etc. This is where you paste the link for your spreadsheet, once it is set up.
    • Add any other text, such as
    • Caregiver & kitty's name (optional)
    • DX: Date
    • Name of Insulin
    • Name of your meter
    • Diet: "LC wet" or "dry food" or "combo"
    • Dosing: TR or SLGS or Custom (if applicable)
    • DKA or other recent health issue (if applicable)
    • Acro, IAA, or Cushings (if applicable)
    • Spreadsheet link. Please put the signature link on the bottom line of your signature information, on its own, so it is easy to find.
    • Please do not put any information about your location in the signature for security reasons. If you wish to add your country location, please add it to your profile.
Be sure to click the 'Save Changes' button at the bottom. If you need help urgently it is important we know these things at a glance. We don’t want to waste valuable time finding out information.

Your signature will appear at the bottom of ALL your posts. That way our helpers can see at a glance all kitties information. It makes everything more efficient for accurate and complete guidance.

ETA Yours may be a bit tricky for 2 kitties. I think with all the right abbreviations you can get all their pertinent information added.
 
Hello and welcome. Levemir is a good insulin for cats, my girl was on it too. You will find that many Lev kitties have some of their lowest numbers around the preshot time. So it does mean you have to get used to shooting lower numbers.

As for helping with dosing, there is some more information we need. We have a couple different dosing methods that are used with Levemir here, and you should go over to the Lantus/Basaglar/Levemir forum and read the yellow starred Sticky Note on Dosing Methods. The dosing methods tell you when to increase and decrease the dose, and by how much. They also have guidelines on what to do when you see lower numbers at preshot. See if one or the other dosing methods suits you best. The suggestions I would give you Chester would vary depending on which dosing method you'd like to follow. There is no rush to decide, and you can choose one then switch if you want.

With both cats, those curves are a good idea, but so are random spot checks. You want to try to get a good idea of when the low points or nadirs occur during the cycle. We determine how to change the dose based on how low the dose is taking your cat. Depending on when you go to bed, the "before bed" test may not tell you much if your Levemir kitty onsets late. But if you get up a couple hours before shot time, a test then might help. A couple of definitions for you:

Learn how YOUR kitty is responding to insulin:
  • Onset - the length of time before insulin reaches the bloodstream & begins lowering blood glucose
  • Peak/Nadir - the lowest point in the cycle
  • Duration - the length of time insulin continues to lower blood glucose
  • How to do a Curve - a simple explanation

Thank you all. I have Chester 1.5 this morning so I think I messed up with that. He was 364 when I checked an hour ago. I will go back to his usual 1.75 tonight. I am going to work on my signature. My daughter is going to help me as I am clueless with this stuff.
