My cat was just diagnosed with diabetes today. I'm feeling really overwhelmed.

The vet recommended we start insulin injections twice a day. Lantus or glargine.

I looked it up online and it seems wildly expensive. Does anyone have a site or a coupon or something to get it a little bit cheaper? I went to GoodRX like my vet recommended but it doesn't seem to allow for people to use coupons for their pets. Is that the case? I don't even know where to begin looking to buy this stuff. Do people ever cross the border? Or order from other countries?

I bought fancy feast and purina dm like my vet recommended. And I have a line on syringes and a glucose monitor but I'm not sure where I can find the actual insulin I need.

On another note, assuming I do find some, how long does it last in the fridge? I'm reading conflicting information on that. Some accounts say 28 days and others say up to 6 months.

Thanks for your help.

Most of us are buying it from Canada because it's 1/3 to 1/2 the price compared to the US. Here's the information on buying from Marks Marine Pharmacy

Marks is having trouble with getting Lantus due to the hoarding, but they have Basaglar which is also Glargine insulin. It works the same as Lantus (and it's a little cheaper too!)

If it's kept in the fridge, it will last you much longer than 28 days (the pens will last until the expiration date) The only reason it says 28 days is because the manufacturer only asked for it to be tested for 28 days....so legally, they have to say that (Big Pharma strikes again)

As long as there are no ketones in the picture (your vet would have said if there were), you can do the diet change to a low carb canned or raw diet while you wait for your insulin....it will also give you some time to learn to home test.

As far as the "prescription" food goes, take it back for a refund (just tell them your cat won't eat it). The kibble is way too high in carbs for a diabetic cat and even the canned isn't worth paying that crazy price. The ingredients are no better (and often worse) than the Fancy Feast Classics or Friskies pates you can get at your local grocery store.

If you are in the US ask your vet for two prescriptions for pens instead of the vials. You may need to call your pharmacies to see if any of them sell a single pen. If you find one just buy one pen to get you started. The other prescription order from Mark's Pharmacy in Canada. Lantus is a very good insulin for cats. A single pen will last several weeks so that is why I suggested only getting one locally. Ordering the insulin from Canada will save you a lot of money. We recommend the pens over the vials since you will be able to use almost every drop. With vials, the insulin will become ineffective long before you can use all of it. One package of pens should provide enough insulin for around 9 months or even more, depending on your dose.

if you’re in the US, the cheapest pharmacy I found for the Lantus pen is Rite Aid at $105. Mark in Canada ia way cheaper with 5 pens at about 169 plus shipping. Good luck!

Here is Single Care Discount Coupon, I called CVS ,Walgreen's and Rite and they all told me they would fill the script for the lantus solestar pen for pets, just bring the script in from the vet. You just print the discount card or send it to your phone
When you need another one check the price again on their site.
You have to put in where you live on their site to see the price, these prices you see are for where I live N.J.
