Willow is having hind leg weakness. He's been showing some weakness with jumping for awhile now, but today he's not walking on his toes and seems very clumsy. I know about adding Methyl-b12, but don't know where to get it and how much to give him. Is there anything else I should be adding to his diet to help him? I'm a wreck. It just hit me tonight that being unemployed has put me in such a nasty situation and I feel I am failing him and my other animals.

There has ben relatively recent post on this board on both the dose and source. I suggest you use the search function in the upper right to find those posts.

It doesn't hurt to make sur eit's not arthritis, etc., but if you are sure it's neuropathy, then going the Methyl B12 route may help quite a bit.

Methylcolbalamin is usually available in health food stores. You can order online, as well - try searching for Xobaline brand from Life Link. Recommended dose is between 3 and 5mg/ day, regardless of body size. It's water soluble, so easy to add to food. Any excess is excreted in the urine, so no worries about overdosing. Remember - it's METHYL B12. Regular B12 has no effect on neuropathy.

And, of course, keep the BGs as low as possible.

I used the link from Hillary at Vitacost. When Mika had her neuropathy, this Methyl B12 worked wonders--before our eyes she stopped having her weakness in her hind legs. Also, be careful of the Xobalamine because it has fructose and maltodextrin in it whereas the one from vitacost does not have any sugars--better for a diabetic cat. We just emptied a 5mg capsule in her food every morning.

This Xobaline product I used for both Ping (GA) & Pong (GA) and I learned about it from this board. Ping's diabetes was never regulated so his neuropathy never went away but I like to think that it helped him jump on the bed-he continued to walk on his hocks though :( 1 pill/ once a day.
Remember that without regulation the neuropathy won't recede. But I hope it helps your cat. :)
 
Xobaline worked wonders for Houdini, who was also walking on his hocks. The tiny little pill may have sugar in it but it never made a difference in his #'s. I would think that this would be cheape than vet injections too.

I made a believer out of my vet when he had a cat come in with FD and legs splayed out and on his belly. The family was ready to pts. Within a month the cat was walking normally again. Of course the insulin played a big part :lol:

Pills would definitely be cheaper if the vet is giving injections, as one injection costs as much as a bottle of the methyl-b12. My vet was going to have me do all future injections if I wanted to go that route though. I told her I preferred the methyl b12 added to his food instead. She has had success with the b12 injections but is going to research the methyl b12 now. Luckily she's always been supportive of how I choose to treat Willow.
