Neomycin & poly dex eye drops, update

Quite awhile ago we took mocha to the vet for having some light pinkness to her eye, in the very corner (outer edge) where it would normally be bright white .. she's had this pinkness for so long we are just used to seeing it .. she also tends to get a lot of eye gunk in that eye, dried eye boogies each morning ... The vet gave us eye drops called Neomycin & Poly Dex (5 ml drops) but we never used them. At the time, she used a dye to see if mocha's eye was scratched, but it wasn't .. I guess that's just the way she's made! :-D

Well the last week or so her eye boogies have been quite wet, and more frequent .. for about a day she was keeping her eye closed but once we started wiping it down with a warm cloth the next day it appeared to be more open .. it's open all the time now, but occasionally she is getting eye boogies that are wet ..

I tested her last night and her bg's were at 50 (diet controlled) so she doesn't seem to be strongly affected by the eye gunk ... but I was wondering if anyone knew anything about these drops and if they seem like a good thing to use? She isn't rubbing at her eye, and she is keeping it open all the time .. so I'm wondering if we should just leave her be for a few more days, or try the drops?

thanks larry .. would it be safe to use this since it is a steroid? I mean, could that effect her numbers with it going into her eye?

If you can wipe and rinse eye at least 6 times a day, you may clear up the problem. I mostly could conquer my Peke's if I wiped with very wet cotton pad every hour or so. but if you don't see real improvement in a day or two I would use the drops, because you don't want to risk blindness. Better a little higher bg that you can control with insulin than blindness.

Is blindness a possibility? Is this something you all think she should go to the vet for?

If we were to make mocha a vet appt for her eye, I was wondering if Larry knew of a good med that could be prescribed for her, without a steroid in it?

I myself would either use the drops or get some other drops/ointment to use. There are many to choose from. You really do not want to mess around with eyes.

Ok thanks .. I will make her an appointment soon .. I don't want to use the drops we have, as they contain a steroid ..

Common eye medications include BNP ointment, Neo-Poly-Dex drops (which is what you have), terramycin oitment, and gentamicin drops. The only one of those that I know for sure has a steroid is the Neo-Poly-Dex, but you'll want to check with your vet for sure. You might also want to talk with your vet about possible causes of the eye issue. If this has been going on a long time, that makes me suspicious of chronic herpes (aka rhinotracheitis) virus. If that is a possible underlying cause, there are other treatments you can try (my civie with chronic herpes eventually ended up on lysine, idoxuridine eye drops, and interferon).
 
Thanks everyone .. we ended up taking mocha into the vets .. the vet ran a schirmer tear test and a flouresceint stain test again .. we actually had to leave her there for about an hour since they got swamped all of a sudden .. but when we got back the tests were done and she said they both were good ..

She did say that her tear duct activity is low so she gave us something called artificial tear ointment that we are supposed to put in both eyes four times a day for a month .. also for one week, four times a day, an antibiotic called Neomycin and Polymyxin B sulfates and Bacitracin Zinc ophthalmic ointment USP .. she said that one does NOT contain steroids ..

She did tell us that we need to go back in one month for a recheck of her tear duct activity .. if it's good, then we can assume it's allergies (we took her in just one year ago for this exact same thing) but if it's not good, we should think about doing the tear drops forever.

Me and peter were thinking about getting the L-lysine product that so many of you use on here .. if she does suffer from allergies that would help, right?
 
Opthalmic drops are not considered a systemic drug, the way oral or injected steroids would be, so the possibility of a systemic effect on glucose is pretty low.
 
I don't think lysine would be helpful it this is caused by allergies. Lysine is generally used for chronic symptoms from viral infections (chronic herpes/rhinotracheitis virus, or chronic calici virus). Hopefully, the short course of BNP ointment, and artificial tears will fix Mocha right up.
