Negative or Trace? This is driving me nuts!

What do you think is the result of this ketone test? It always looks between negative and trace. Is that normal? My kitty just went through a DKA episode a couple weeks ago so I am trying to keep an eye out. Do your normal diabetic kitties that have had no ketones show a result that is in between negative and trace? Just trying to get a sanity check over here!

Thanks!

Ok- good to know. It was less than a minute. I re-read the instructions and these are 15 second tests. Will do another one tomorrow and have camera ready to take pic within 15 seconds and repost.

By "dipping"- I put kitty in the box and stick the strip under his butt and he pees on it. Tonight he gave me a really wierd look which made crack up! He probably thinks his meowmy is a wierdo!

Back to original question though- if i keep getting a result that looks between negative and trace, should I be concerned or is this normal? How often should I be testing? Since advised to do so, I have been testing Pawzie every day or other day.

Thanks! :)

If you can test daily, that's best, especially if he's had a recent DKA diagnosis!

If it's "trace" you can probably handle it at home but anything more than that needs to be handled by a vet immediately......adding extra water to the food or syringing extra water into him will help clear ketones

Thanks for the feedback Chris. Will definitely start testing daily.

Will retest again in am and if trace will add more water to his food. He is on a small dose of insulin- vestulin- which you probably know causes steep drops in BG so we can't really up his dose at this point. Waiting to hear back from vet on progress and long term plans.

So it should always look exactly negative, not in between, right?

I agree with what Chris has said. I find that it's important to time the strip carefully (15 sec for mine) and view it under a really good light. The negative and trace colours are hard to differentiate. I always add quite a bit of warm water to Teasel's wet food for extra hydration.

Thomas got VERY upset the first time I stuck a strip under him. He looked at me like "okay, THAT is IT" and once he was finished peeing he jumped and immediately hid under the bed!
Thanks for the giggle! :D

BTW, if you care to share, it would be nice to know your name. :)
