I gave Sweet Pea her insulin and the needle came back bent. I checked her fur and skin for insulin but couldn't find any. The Lantus Solostar pen went back to 0 as it's supposed to do. Do you think she got her insulin and I'm just not finding the insulin in her fur?

I always smell the area after I give a shot. The smell of insulin is unmistakable. If you didn't feel any dampness on her fur, she probably got her dose. Do you home test? If you do, the next test will tell you for sure.

Are you using the needles the pen uses? You can also use syringes and pull the insulin out just like you would for a vial. Since pens usually dose in whole units, the syringe is a better option if you are trying to dose in smaller increments such as .5 or .25 units.

I'm using the needles the pen uses. Part of the reason we are using the pen is I had difficulty seeing the markings on the syringe and I'm terrified of giving her the wrong amount.

You could use a magnifier that you can get at most craft or office supply stores to help you read the syringes. If you need to increase the dose, a whole unit may be too much. That is why we recommend increases in .25 or .5 units at a time.

You can also get some rather cheap reading glasses at a WalMart that magnifies a good bit for situations like this. I got a pair and its night and day trying to get a little ear blood drop lined up to the end of a test stick. Almost can't do it without the glasses and sometimes completely fail, but with the glasses its a simple chore. Although I can't actually wear them any longer than the task itself, instant nausea to the point of barfing almost. Helps a lot with the syringe markings as well.
