You can also use syringes and pull the insulin out just like you would for a vial. Since pens usually dose in whole units, the syringe is a better option if you are trying to dose in smaller increments such as .5 or .25 units.
You could use a magnifier that you can get at most craft or office supply stores to help you read the syringes. If you need to increase the dose, a whole unit may be too much.
